@onceuponatrain
25 күн бұрын
I wondered when someone would ask about that. Disney steam trains aren't my only hobby; I'm a lifelong fan of Jeff Lynne. The cover of the Discovery album shows a man holding a small version of the ELO logo (spaceship). I thought that would be a nice thing to have, only to find that it was never made into a product. Years later, a company made an accurate, miniature model of the Wurlitzer 1015 jukebox. Then they released the matching Wurlitzer 4008 speakers. These speakers were the basis for Kosh's creation of the ELO logo that first appeared on A New World Record. I purchased four of these speakers and converted them into the ELO logo by updating the colors and creating a new hub out of styrene and polished brass. I kept one and the other three are being enjoyed by friends and family.

As a newcomer to model train enthusiasts I’d be curious to know if any UK manufacturer such as Hornby ever produced a OO Gauge Disneyland RR model. I understand HO can be used on UK tracks but the “scale” becomes an issue. Can anyone here, or any UK Disney enthusiasts advise please? I’d like to incorporate a railway line into a diorama model of Disneyland in my garage.
@onceuponatrain
25 күн бұрын
Hi, Andy. Hornby made a Toy Story 3 set in 2010. The locomotive was fashioned after the "Old 95" (a reference to the release year of the first Toy Story film). In turn, Old 95 was based on the C. K. Holliday. I own this set and the engine is remarkable well made for being a "toy". The proportions and colors are quite nice. There are a few missing aspects, such as the drive rods and the entire tender. But it's well made and would be a great starting point for a C. K. Holliday kitbash. As for scale, that's always a consideration for Disney trains because these models are scale versions of something that itself was a scale model. HO is meant to be 1:87 of the prototype and OO is 1:76.2. But of what? The Holliday is nominally five-eighths the size of the Central Pacific 173. So is the Hornby loco 1:76.2 of the CP173? Or is it a much larger scale model of something that is little more than half of the CP173? This is why I try to refer to gauge and not scale; while the Toy Story locomotive is a scale model of *something*, it will run on OO / HO track. My suggestion is to do what Walt did: look at something in its setting and decide if it looks "right" to you or not.

Michael, thank you for your continued work documenting the history of Disney’s Railroads. One interesting tidbit about the Walt Disney World Railroad, that ties to my part of the country: All 4 locomotives were refurbished at Tweetsie Railroad, in Blowing Rock, N.C. They did all 4 locomotives in the late 90’s and early 2000’s (with the Lilly Belle’s overhaul paying for their current shop facilities!) In fact, the Roger E. Broggie, notably, wore a coat of Tweetsie Green until it returned from the shops of the Strasburg Railroad in Pennsylvania, not too long ago! They were also, supposedly, rumored to have been approached by Disney to handle the overhaul of the Ward Kimball at Disneyland, before they eventually chose a firm closer to home. Keep on steaming, Michael! Looking forward to what you’ve got in store next!

Where both fired by oil on opening day?
@onceuponatrain
Ай бұрын
Yes, they did. In the late 1800's, the primary types of fuel for steam locomotives were coal, wood, and -- eventually -- oil. There weren't any "filling stations" in the early days of railroading, so the steam engines burned whatever source was nearby and abundant. The shape of the smoke stack changes based on the type of fuel. For example, wood burning engines run the risk of sparks setting fire to the surrounding area and they have diamond-shaped smokestacks to help capture those cinders. However, by the early 20th century, oil was much easier to find around the country. It's also far easier to fire an oil-burner than those that use solid fuels. (I've fired all types and I can personally vouch for this. If I never lift another shovel of coal in my life, I'll be a happy man.) The Disneyland locomotives were all oil-fired because of this, but still sported the various types of smokestacks to represent the era and geography that they are meant to represent. The engines were later converted to biodiesel for a number of reasons and we'll get into that in Part 2.

Something fun to share is that even though Casey Jr. No 9 and Casey Jr. No 7 look just about identical, they have what I'd say are very different personalities. I loved number 7 because it felt "lighter" and a little faster and I swear the seat was more comfortable, and Casey Jr. No 9 was clunkier and "heavier" and felt a bit more unpredictable in operation. Good morning, Michael! I just found this episode and wanted to add a couple of items. Such a well-done production and narration! 1) Accucraft. Are these the folks in Union City, CA? If so, I have a good deal of G Scale electric items I purchased from Channing Chen and the very nice folks, there. Though now in Florida since December of 2023, I lived not 10 minutes from that business location. 2) Billy was a fellow member of a Masonic Lodge in Los Gatos, CA., and had created his 1/3 Scale layout at his property on Daves Avenue. He would open it up a couple of times each month and to the public one Sunday a month (for a donation, but it was free). The proceeds were used to help maintain the railroad a portion of which he would donate to the three Masonic-sponsored youth groups in Los Gatos. Living between Saratoga and Los Gatos, it was easy for me to travel the few miles to Billy's home...Daves Ave. was a shortcut from Winchester Blvd. to Hwy 9, or the Los Gatos-Saratoga Road. I believe Billy was introduced to Walt by Ward Kimball or Ollie Johnston who both had the railroad bug and knew of Billy's railroad. The Daves Avenue location is now several homes. Again. Well done and congratulations! PS A neighbor's daughter for a time was a docent at the Disney Museum at the old Presidio grounds and was also an onboard manager on Disney Cruise liners. PSS In the early summer of 1966, my DeMolay buddy, Gary, and I drove to Disneyland in his '57, two-door, stayed at the Jolly Roger Inn, and walked across the street into the park. Of course, the first stops were the train station and firehouse. At the firehouse, we were truly Blessed to meet Walt. With Walt behind the wheel of an old-time fire truck with, I believe his granddaughters and dressed in his traditional Blueish-Grey suit, Gary pumped his arm up and down yelling, "Mr. Disney, Mr. Disney....two DeMolay's are here!" Walt was a Mason, after a few moments of greeting members of the throng, Walt came over to us, shook our hands, and gave each of us his business card, which he routinely did. We didn't wash our right hands for a couple of days! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billy_Jones_(railroader)#:~:text=Jones%20died%20of%20leukemia%20in,the%20original%20location%20of%20the
