Something tells me an attorney designed this for "safety". Yeah - it's safe all right down in the recesses of my garbage can.

Maybe you can take that bar out, pull the "tongue" back, and put the bar in front of the tongue.

Great mods. The only thing I need is the handle, the spool for the tape, and the cutting blade.

Hi Dylan, I followed your suggestion, took out the plastic and the spring inside. But the knife was still moving back and forth. On each side, you will see a narrow slit (or channel) in which the knife is moving back and forth (or up and down, depending on how you look at it), right? What I did further was to fill up/plug in the space where the metal travels back and forth with 3M Double Coated Urethane Foam tape (basically, I doubled it and plugged in there) and taped over it. Now the blade does not move at all. Yet, the metal piece behind the plastic I took out is still flipping back and forth, which is a nuisance. So, I taped the metal piece from the round metal rod to the metal piece. Now nothing is moving. You can fill up the slit with anything, such as silicon, rubber, metal. The point is to fill up the space so that the knife blade does NOT move up and down or back and forth! Hope this helps people out there who is frustrated with it like myself. Perhaps Scotch can come up with an option of plugging in that space, namely you plug a metal or plastic piece into that space in order to make the blade come up and stay there at all times, or otherwise it works like as it is intended to work without this option.

Annoying as heck! so glad I came upon this video. My main complaint has been the metal plate meant to hold the tape only the roll. The spring is so strong, it won't release the tape. I also carry a box cutter to cut the tape.

Thanks! My other one from 10 years ago worked perfectly but this new one - I end up cutting the tape with a scissors! I was specifically looking for a way to permanently put this in the cutting position. I almost considered jamming a nail in there - this is much better!

I thought I was loosing it by using scissors to cut the tape. And I thought this is dumb. I am pretty technical but this annoyed me first time using it. So I go to my instruction manual You Tube and thanks Dillon for the mod.

These things SUCK. I ground off the metal on both sides....the corners that ride on the box surface where the blade extends, all the way back so that the blade protrudes fully through the tape when fully extended without having to smash the tape dispenser into the box surface so hard to cut the tape. Hard to describe.

Nice one Dylan. Appreciate what you did here. Just 5 1/2 minutes of an easy-to-understand, productive video and now I can at least use this bloody, frustration-riddled, bastard of a purchase I made. ...Plus, modding regular stuff is fun. I like what you came up with. Cheers

About to do modify mine right now. Thanks.
@jamespaul1097

Things to note about doing this modification 1- By setting the teeth permanently out, you lose the function of the tape to stick to the static flat bar. This causes the tape to flop about when using the bang down & roll technique. 2- The plastic shield you discarded, not only is useful for pushing down on the applied tape for better adhesion but also to retain the static charge to the static bar. I pack 600 + items every working day and have purchased and modified many 3& 2” tape dispensers in a quest for the ultimate dispenser. Good video though, nice to know there are blokes out there that are -- or --if not more boring than I am. 👌 👍

Thanks for the comment; great insight! I suppose for my purposes (most of the things I pack I need to wrap by hand) it's an improvement, but may not fit the needs of everyone.

@@tomb9484 It does work, for packaging boxes. If you want a dispenser that works differently, you would buy a different one.

I think the key thing is that you pack 600+ items a day. As a result, you have managed to develop the correct technique. In other words, this is really a pro tool and only pros work it properly. The rest of us, mere amateurs that we are, don't use the thing enough to get good at it, and so we spend half our time untangling ourselves from tape, as if we were Frodo Baggins just after his encounter with Shelob.
