Bands were an important part of both sides in the Civil War , the Union budget was estimated to be around 4 million dollars per year with 618 bands in 1862 and the Confederate cost was not nearly as much and with less band members . Quite a sum of money especially for the South. Lee remarked that he could not imagine an army without a band.

@@KR72534 I read it in a Civil War Trivia book. I’ll look in the garage for it, get back to you. If you like that kind of stuff , read about the amazing story about Robert Smalls, it would make a great movie.

@@KR72534 Ok, I have to correct my statement about the cost , the Union cost was estimated at $4,000,000 per year and in July 1862 there were 618 bands in the Union. The Confederate cost is not stated but their bands were not as large as that of the Union. Band members actually earned more than a regular soldier in the Union Army. The book I read this from is: The Civil War - Strange & Fascinating Facts by Burke Davis, author of the Gray Fox which you might be familiar with. There is one Chapter (2) House Divided that really is thought provoking about families , friends, brothers, fathers and sons fighting against each other. I will correct my earlier post. The Book Company is Wings Books and the book was originally published as “ Our Incredible Civil War”

@@KR72534 Just like you, loved all subjects on history, I remember checking out a Civil War book from the school library over a dozen times just to pour over the illustrated battle scenes. I have sort a of photographic memory especially when it’s a subject that interests me, it gets stored like in a memory card. I would prescribe to me a statement once made by Mark Twain who said something about being a prodigious noticer of people. And I would add “ of people and things”. Thank you for your complements and did you look up Robert Smalls? His story is one that should be taught in school and a movie made about him.

The mustached officer on the right at 1:40 is Jeff Shaara, who wrote the novel "Gods and Generals" and who's father wrote "The Killer Angels" which became the film Gettysburg. Jeff went from being a Coin Collector to an author because of the success of his dad's book being turned into the a film. He has written other historical fiction novels on the American Revolution, Civil War, World War 1, World War 2, Korean War, and a novel on Theodore Roosevelt.

@@michael-jl7qv Who fired the first shots again? And please spare me the argument of so-called self-defense. Never mind, it was never about that anyway. and one last question...how old are you? 2 grandfathers served with the CSA?

@@Bonygasse I've always said the southern aristocracy seceded because of slavery while the average southerner fought for their homeland. The vast majority of southerners did not own slaves or support the institution but the people in charge absolutely did and seceded to preserve the state's rights to slavery, there's no denying that.
@kevinlebaron3157

The majority maybe didn’t own slaves but to say they didn’t support the institution would not be accurate. At a minimum, they saw African Americans as inferior and their proper place as being in chains subject to servitude. They detested any abolitionist movement in the north, even if the majority of northerners weren’t there to fight for freeing the slaves.

I have always loved this song as one of the oldest Confederate songs! I am a Northerner born and bred in Pennsylvania, I have only been down South on my honeymoon 38 years ago. But I have loved and respected the true South ever since my high school years when I researched both sides after an argument with my history teacher. I learned for the first time how Lincoln brutalized the South and invaded the CSA after they legally voted to secede from the Union over unfair taxation without representation: just as our Founding Fathers broke from England in 1776 for the same reason. Lincoln wanted to drag the South back into the Union bc he needed their tax money.
