Hey there, I'm doing this trip in September 2024 (next month). What kind of advice can you give about packs on the bike for this trip? I've been studying the packs you guys have. What would you have done differently?
@aaronnull8950

I had just a frame bag and a handlebar roll and that worked well for me. The others had a rear rack from Old Man Mountain with a dry bag. I would plan to pack as light as you can, it will make the singletrack sections more enjoyable I think. Other than clothing (bring layers, it will get very cold at night at some of the huts) you won't need to pack much each day, just your food/water to get to the next hut - we all used a hip pack to carry our food/water each day.
@ChristopherBloom
Ай бұрын
@@aaronnull8950 I appreciate it! Packing light is a challenge for me lol. Did you only have one set of riding gear, or did you have 2 that you switched between each day (while the other dried)?
@aaronnull8950
Ай бұрын
@@ChristopherBloom I just had one set of riding clothes, and just some layers to put on top in the AM. It was cold at high elevations, especially at night, but it got really hot as we got closer to Moab so layering was a must.

Bikepacked from Featherville to Atlanta over some crazy pass, spent the night and went back over an even crazier stretch. Shorter than your route, but steeper and had to hike a bike in 102F temps with zero shade. Looks beautiful and brings back some good memories. We were both on rigid gravel bikes running 55’s. Were you both on hardtails? Mon know the wheelie king was, but didn’t see the other bike. If rigid, what did you think was best for that route. Thanks for the great filming!
@aaronnull8950
3 ай бұрын
I was on a hardtail. I think a rigid MTB would be great on this route as well, though. A gravel bike would do just fine out here as well but I appreciated the extra comfort and being able to ride the downhills without much effort, even if the climbing was a little slower on a MTB.

After you were done riding for the day was there a lot of time spent at the hut relaxing? Trying to decide if I should take a hammock
@aaronnull8950
Жыл бұрын
Definitely a lot of time to relax! A hammock would have been worth the weight if I went again. We also brought a card game with us and played that a lot while hanging out at the cabins. Some of the days we would go ride around after getting to the cabin and unloading our bikes. I think the 2nd hut had some really cool trails in the area to explore.

I'm looking at doing this with a friend next summer and am thinking through bike choice. I have nicer / newer gravel bike (titanium and can fit up to 50C tires) and fat bike, and an older (not tubelss) hardtail mountain bike. I'm thinking mostly roads, but maybe similar to yours, trying to fit in 15-20% of it as singletrack. I kind of want to take the fat bike (carbon Salsa Beargrease - no suspension other than the poofy tires!). Do you think that would work well on the route as you did it (realizing there will probably be some walking and I'm not much of a technical singletrack rider)?
@aaronnull8950
Жыл бұрын
Hi Ben, if I was choosing between a fat bike and a gravel bike I would take the gravel bike on 50c tires with somewhat aggressive tread. There are plenty of long road stretches that would be a bear on a fat bike, especially on days 4-7 which got brutally hot in August. There are a couple sections of singletrack that might be tough on a gravel bike, though...particularly the singletrack coming into Moab (either porcupine or falcon/eagle).

@@ElrataAlata I was the one riding a hardtail, and it worked out great! Most of the days are kind of a "choose your own adventure" in that you can ride a lot of optional singletrack or stick to gravel/dirt roads. We probably did 15% or so singletrack in total. Some of the trails were pretty gnarly on a loaded bike, but nothing a hardtail can't handle.

Did this trip a few years ago and did almost all the single track options no problem. Looks like these guys might have skipped porcupine rim at the end which is the best mountain biking of the whole trip, but can be a bit more difficult with packs. We rode with seat packs instead of handlebar packs, which we had to take of a strap on our backs for porcupine rim because our rear suspension would hit the packs.

Sure! I am riding a Chumba Sendero right now, Megan has a Spot Mayhem. It was a great option for this race for me. I have tried a ton of different saddles but the one I have settled on for now is the WTB Koda saddle. I opted to use a rear rack instead of a dropper post bag for this setup and I think it worked out really well as it gave me full use of my dropper post. I have a Tumbleweed T-Rack and Megan has an Old Man Mountain rack.
