I got it done but I couldn’t get the old bushing with the magnet. It disappeared somewhere on top of that plate. I was able to use a piece of copper wire and I pulled the new bushing into place which worked pretty good. Hopefully that old busing just falls out somewhere. Oh, and glad I read the comments, cause I initially reinstalled it with the washer against the nut and then reading the comments. I see it goes on the other side of the gear against the bushing. I had to push the shaft back up again in order to get the washer between the plate and The gear plate. All works well now Of course, now looking under here i see I need a new main belt from the motor. Hopefully you have another video on that lol

After the hex steering bushing was removed, I threaded a length of string trimmer filament up the hole until it cleared the engine bay. Put the new bushing on the line and let it slide down to the hole. A little pinky finagling got it seated properly. My old pinion gear only had wear close to one edge so I was able to flip it over and reuse. Fortunate as the replacement bushing was not bundled with a new pinion gear.

Using the string trimmer line was a perfect example of another way to get the job done by thinking outside the box, in my case a magnet was the first thing to come to mind, I wish I would have thought about flipping the gear though, I think that would have made a more interesting video, thanks for the positive feedback...

That "Hex steering bushing" SHOULD have only one possible way to be located (instead of being an ordinary hex shape with six possible positions) because the hole through the bushing SHOULD be angled the same as the steering column is angled, yet it appears that the bushing has a simple vertical hole... Designed to FAIL, by the looks of it. No wonder those 'pilot' guide holes don't stay circular in shape. Bad design!

CubCadetpartsdirect.Com - Hex flange = CC941-0656A, Steering gear = CC717-1550F, Pinion Steering Gear = CC717-1554 I also checked with Cubparts.com, the numbers are the same except there is no "CC" in front of the number. Cub cadet parts and more also uses the same numbers except the hex flange is 741-0656A. Hope this helps. - Big Steve

Thanks for creating the video and sharing! This helped me replace my flange and gear. One thing to note: your washer shouldn't be against the nut. It should be against the mower body. This is based on manuals and part diagrams. Not a big deal though.

Another tip to use when replacing the bushing. Put a dab of grease on the washer and position it over the bushing cutout before you drop the steering shaft. It will capture the washer between the body and the steering plate so you don’t have to wiggle the steering shaft up and down to get it into position.

That flat washer is supposed to be on the spline shaft above the pinion gear. Not between the pinion nut and the pinion gear. See proper placement in this video: kzitem.info/news/bejne/x5Wt0n2Bs6N0aH4

Steve the easiest way to do this is to remove the deck. then drain all the fluid from mower. then take the mower and tilt it up backwards onto a work bench allowing the mower seat in folded position to hold the mower steady on the bench, then rachet strapthe entire mower onto bench for safety. Then from the floor board of cubby looking down toward steering mechanism, remove the cub cadet sticker, some models have a plastic insert to access the crappy cast nut, others like my ltx 1050 have no access port, so just drill a 3/4 in diameter hole from the top down toward the nut and then use a magnet stick to lower down the new caster nut into the void while holding new steering gear up and in place from the bottom, use an impact and job is done less than 2 min my friend.
@bigsteveslittlefarm
2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback, although Im not sure that's the easiest way, but it certainly is another option, i have this down to a less than 5 min practice, and dont have to drain fliuds, thanks again for sharing your idea...

When the hex bearing gets worn out, so does the steering shaft that turns in it. The existing worn out shaft will be sloppy fit in a new bearing. The whole thing will soon fail again. Replace the shaft too.
@bigsteveslittlefarm
2 жыл бұрын
Thats a good possibility, however, when i made this video over 6 yrs ago i did not change the shaft and it is still working just fine, but to your point one should inspect the shaft at that time as well.

Order of installation after you place the steering rod is as follows: 1) Flat Washer 2) Pinion Gear 3) Flanged Nut. In the video you put the pinion gear first. That will work but the flat washer and flanged nut should sandwich the gear to provide stability and endurance. Nice, helpful video!

What makes he that was a pretty good video yeah those little cubs are not built near as good as the more heavy-duty 2003 thousand series or xt3 now I was astonished that you did not put any type of IES pin Lube which is a super good lubricant for something like that or even some anti seize or maybe even a little bit of red and tacky grease nothing just put that in there dry I was just astonished that you didn't attempt to put some kind of lubricant on there man that thing's not going to last any time at all run and dry like that and there should be a little bit of lubrication grease on that flat gear as well especially work contacts with the retainer nut it's great that you're showing people how to do things and that's fantastic but a lot of people don't have any mechanical abilities so they're not even going to realize that oh wait I should have put some lubrication on those moving parts please check out IES pin Lube 4550 you can get it out of company in Florida called S&R Fastener and I guarantee you once you buy a can of that it's a good-sized can for like $9 and change you will just lubricate everything on the farm it is absolutely hands-down fantastic best lubricant you've ever had door hinges door latches interior door hinges any type of metal to metal surface it will not wash off and it will not attract dirt it is just absolutely fantastic IES 4550 pen Lube

I see where you replaced the pilot bearing with a thin bearing. If you look hard enough there are thick designed pilot bearings that last a long time. They are more then twice the thickness of the less expensive replacement bearings. You can use the gear twice by turning it around. If you notice the wear area on the gear is not half way. So turning it around you get to an unused area on the gear.
