Pretty good. the only thing I'd suggest is a thicker layer of substrate. Mine is maybe half the size of that one, but has already burrowed around 2" down beneath his rock.

DO NOT ADVISE THIS METHOD AT ALL. STOMOS MANTIS SHRIMPS ARE VICIOUS BUT SENSITIVE. THEIR TANKS NEED CYCLED. THIS GUY IS AN AMATEUR, HASNT KEPT THEM BEFORE OR DONE ANY RESEARCH.

Dude you are giving people all the wrong advice, i have 4 PMS (peacocm mantis shrimp), and all are in 40 gallon breeders (seperatly), and just a short list, one, that tank is glass, (no go), two, you put your rock on top of the sand substrate, (rookie mistake as mantis shrimp already are diggers and will collasp that rock scape), and 3, that tank is no where near big enough to support the bio load of rotting shrimp, clams, muscles, food for the shrimp, ect... Get educated before you put a half assed video together that will do nothing more than cause people heart break by loosing stock...

It actually looks pretty good. Live plants can be so hard to keep alive and grow. The crypt is real? But grown cover fake? You see I am not even sure lol. Red or plants other than green are harder to buy/find and grow so I. Considering using some fake ones in those colours to mix in with my real crypts, swords and moss.

He’s so cool! But, I would have to have things that were small faux fish etc. swimming around just to see him more. He just wants to hide? ☹️

Was the aquarium cycled? These guys can absolutely break the glass of that aquarium. They can break through an inch of safety glass which is considerably stronger than a nontempered aquarium. It's rare that it happens but it does happen

no they can't, that's definitely an exaggeration.

Seems too small a tank for this mantis. They like to get out an explore once comfortable and that just doesn't seem possible in this setup

Mantis shrimps love small spaces, so having a hole for it is necessary but a bigger tank wouldn't harm it
@strider5119

they dont like to get out and explore, they stick around their cave, defend it and only venture out for food.

cant the shrimp shatter the tank ?
@nicoleallison6105
5 жыл бұрын
that is a common misconception. The mantis shrimp can only shatter the glass of a tank to small for him. Usually the small tanks have weak glass, but if you have a large enough tank the shrimp will not break the glass

They can actually shatter the glass, but they just wont do it cuz doing so spend alot of energy, they only do it when theres guaranteed feast
@strider5119

They can shatter thin glass, anything like 10mm and over is fine

Appreciation for the very educational and informative video. Also for excellent hi quality recording, and nice background audio track, muted during speech. Thanks for posting. One suggestion. Don't know if this is evan possible, but would be great if there was a light eithar inside or outside the tank, pointed directly into the mantis cave. Unless that would bother it?

Awesome set up @FishHelpChicago! Your design looks incredible for a reef set up, but I have a few suggestions for people looking to keep a Mantis Shrimp safely. Put the rocks in before the sand unless you have a deep sand bed. Mantis Shrimp will dig into the sand causing the rocks to shift and could possibly lead to a squashed friend. A large rock with undercuttings is best as it can be partially buried allowing the shrimp to make his own home safely. If you don't have a deep bed, you should add a thick sheet of acrylic to the bottom of the tank in case your Mantis Shrimp decides it wants to go deeper than the bottom of your tank.
