Jazz is not dead, dying, and will never die. The only reason why jazz isn't a popular genre on Spotify is because it's performed live almost EXCLUSIVELY. Thats where the heart of jazz is

she's not a jazz musician. They improvise, it takes a lot of investment to do so. Even the scat in her song, she reproduces it in concert note for note.

Laufey is legit my idol, i long to see her live❤❤❤❤ Also can i just say Im sad too see ppl say “her music isn’t jazz” when it quite clearly is, her main inspo is bosa nova, Chet Baker and Fitzgerald, those who say that her music isn’t jazz just haven’t researched the sub genre’s of jazz.

What an interesting video! I definitely agree with your points. This is a similar discussion with that idea people have with Olivia Rodrigo and how she “single-handedly” made pop rock and pop punk popular when in reality it never left in the first place. It has always been popular just for a specific niche of people. I think gen z (I’m in gen z so I can say this) refuse to actually enjoy and experience diff genres and artists hence why when someone becomes super popular in one genre they think they are the savior of it. Laufey is definitely a unique artist and musically is so talented so I can see the appeal of her. We also have this obsession with nostalgia and the past so when someone dwells into that we deeply hold onto it. On the other hand, I think it’s hypocritical when other artists who are already in this genre become popular because then you are filled a poser or “Olivia Rodrigo or Laufey” wannabe when in reality you’ve always listened or made music in that particular genre.

I DID NOT know jazz is this unpopular O_O. Seriously it's like, my FAVOURITE genre, I'd dare to say. And when I stumbled upon Laufey with her From The Start (my current FAV song), I started to love it even more. Nevertheless I'm so glad we have her and how she manages to bring Jazz back ;))

You made one point that stood out. When you mentioned that a high number of her fans are men. From a sociological perspective it make a lot of sense. As modern feminism can take a very harsh stance on men, her music takes a much different position. Basically that men can coexist without taking a negative viewpoint by default. Even though she lists Taylor Swift as an influence, she can still take a song that communicates a negative experience and sound amazing doing it. "Goddess" is an excellent example. If you listen to it as more of a background or ambient music you wouldn't even notice what it is about, then you pay attention to the lyrics and are surprised from what you just heard.

Jazz isn't dead & it doesn't need a saving. You're gravely mistaken, my friend. Love Laufey & her music but it's not a jazz. It's a midcentury pop with jazz influences. She could be the bridge between pop & Jazz & influence for the younger generations though.

the biggest reason why she does so well and other artist might not is also because she doesnt put her music as the center of her social media posts. she just posts whatever she wants and goes with it.

I wasn’t really a big Laufey fan until this year. It’s bc I saw a video with “Falling Behind” in the background, so I wanted to listen to it. Then Spotify recommended some more music and now I’m a Laufey fan lol. I like jazz, but I wasn’t too sure about jazz with singing, Laufey made me realize I’m a jazz girl. Her songs are really good! Tho I don’t get the Mitski conparison. Sure, their lyrics sound similar but Laufey is more jazz whereas Mitski is more rock. I think it might be bc they’re both Wasian, but idk. Great video!!

Yeah, there was a little bit of success in Jazz with Norah Jones and more recently Esperanza Spaulding. Currently, Millenial Samara Joy is bringing a lot of attention in the industry. All 3 of the previously mentioned artists are more ensconced in Jazz than Laufey who is really just covering old Pop Standards from the '40s. But Laufey is cool because she is getting young Millenials to listen to tunes that were adopted into the Jazz canon. If she is truly a great "Jazz artists" her fans will start to consume Jazz. But if they don't, that means that she is an insular Pop phenomenon. It is probably a given that his very reviewer knows nothing about Jazz. The tell for this is when there is never any context for Laufey success of reference to other artists in the Jazz community. Another reason for her success is that Leafey is young and very attractive and that is catnip for the Algorithms of social media. People listen with their eyes. The real Jazz audience listens with their ears particularly because we have a reference for the tradition. This is not and old person's opinion, so much as I know very young cats on the scene (Seattle) that are very aware of the tradition. Like Laufey, they too are inspired by the classics of Pops, Ella, Oscar Peterson, but they engage their music with improvisation and innovation. I think that Laufey is super talented and also a gifted songwriter. I just wish she had more to say with the tradition of improvisation. Surely she was trained in it at Berklee. Jazz's pillar foundation is built upon IMPROVISATION. That is what I want to hear from Laufey. Norah, Esparanza and Samara Joy all have massive improvisation chops. And like Laufey, they propel Jazz forward as an idiom. I look forward to hearing more from Laufey because she is quite awesome!

there's probably a zillion artists doing the same things as her on tik-tok without blowing up. in the end it's really about the songs, without "from the start" she would probably still have been quite unknown.
