Is it normal for angel yellow label ferments to smell like farts for a while? The stuff stinks 2 days in, makes me think if the stink will go away after the alcohol shuts down the mold.

I know old video. But you can use Angel Rice Leaven (the Rhizopus oryzae used in yellow label) with Mangrove Jacks Kveik Yeast M12. Temp range for the two are about the same and so work really well together for grain.

I'm looking to do the same style mead in the next few weeks. Do you plan on adding hops? If so when would you add them?

Awesome - I'm keeping this Medieval-esque so won't add hops. If I did I'd probably add some during the addition of the grains while the brew cools and then also dry hop if I felt it didn't take well 👍

@@experimentalhomebrewing8145 Cool, thanks. I got some lemondrop hops and I'm gonna add some orange peel as well to really make the citrus flavors pop

Do you think this yellow label can be combined with a traditional beer yeast to get a no-mash beer? I mean, if one were to add hop tea and bottle-condition maybe?

I think Angel will dominate other yeast strains and they won't get a real chance to shine; however that's a line of inquiry I'm going to follow in the future for sure 🙂

Get Angel Rice Leaven (the Rhizopus oryzae used in yellow label) I pair it with M12 yeast as the temp range for both is about the same.

So what came out? Did it taste good as barleywine, or did it have to be distilled to become pallatable?

I think the Angel yeast flattened the grains out a little too much for it to be a great ale. I reckon Angel and grains is far more of a distillation candidate as you say 👍

I just ordered 500g of the yellow label after seeing your Sake videos. I cannot wait to try this recipe too. Keen to see your results.

I was genuinely expecting the angel to strip the rice taste out of the sake, since it's a distillers strain. Suppose that's what you want though, since sake is pretty neutral for a rice wine anyways.

I had worked a lot with this yeast. 1)They very good if you have unmalted grains. And low wines distilling on reflux column. 2) if your malt is old, or starch didn't convert correctly. Then this yeast like plan b 😃 But if you using malted grains. Better to use special yeast for grains.

Fantastic birth of new brew site. Well done. I would be interested to see how the 'Yellow Label Yeast ' goes with an all rye wash. It would be so good to not have to deal with the rye grain 'clag' factor.

I've seen the yellow label yeast in a couple videos, does the yeast have enzymes mixed in to turn the starches into sugars? I'm so confused on how yeast could eat starch.....

Yes, alpha and beta amylase as well as glucoamylase.

If you look at the package the 1st ingredient is yeast and the 2nd ingredient is rhizopus: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhizopus_oryzae Those are live microorganisms that produce saccharifying enzymes.

I've used it quite a bit in the past on rice (glutenous) and corn, barley but I usually distill it, it sure is amazing it also makes one lazy :), it pays to mill the rice finer the better and it ferments out quicker. Cheers 🦘👍.

does it tast like commercial sake? I thought this yeast is for distilling... Im trying to make Sake my self.

It's kind of more raw-tasting I think, not in a bad way necessarily. Fairly dry yet sweetish, I'd say it lacks the depth of a commercial saké without having one to taste beside it. I think if I make it again I'll go stronger on tbe ABV though and moon-shot it for that 18%
