I use a multi tool with a carbide blade. Cuts through plaster and lathe like butter with less mess.

sometimes if the lathe is dry and brittle it works fine but hydrated lathe will smoke carbide blades out all day

@@Bradley-tx6ed Well, you cut the plaster only with carbide grit blade, then use plunge blade for the lathe...easy peasy

Did you have to remove the drum from the hub assembly?
@RB0087

The front drums just pull off in theory. The rear is a bit more involved, you pull the axle (by just removing the bolts in the center of the wheel hub), then remove the bearing (which needs a special socket and you need to bend back the lock ring tabs). Then the drum will come off. Of course that is all assuming that it isn't stuck on there, in which case it will need a bit of persuasion, turning back the self adjusters, or worst case scenario, cutting the drum off if it is totally siezed and won't turn no matter what. I had to cut one of mine off. That one had been sitting for 25 years and the brakes had problems when it was parked, though.

RB0087 ok so I might be in for a treat at this point. So I found a machine guy that will press them off. Is that wise to do with a machine shop press you think? It just feels like it’s never going to come off and this is the front wheels. I know the back wheels need breaks too.

@@AnthonyPerez One correction from what I said yesterday: the front drums don't just come off like a modern car, they come off after you take the wheel bearing out. Have you done that? I figured you were working on the rear, so I didn't give it much thought, but that's of course very important. If you haven't done that, you pop off the dust cap, and then it should be pretty obvious what to do from there, a couple nuts and a lock ring if I remember correctly. If after you take the wheel bearing off it still won't come off, there are a few things you can do. If the drum can turn but won't come off, the shoes have probably worn down the drum a little, creating a lip behind them that is catching on the shoes. If that's the case, you can solve that by backing off the adjuster mechanism. There are several videos about that, but in essence, you push up the ratcheting arm with one long skinny tool, and turn the star wheel with the other. This pulls the shoes closer together, and that lets them clear the lip on the edge of the drum. Good luck! I would say that if the drum turns, then with some perseverance you'll be able to get it off without a press eventually.

How do I determine if I have the heavy duty axles? I have a 1967 F250 Camper Special and I am trying to determine which to order.

What was holding the adjusting cable guide? The silver curved bracket above the red spring. I tried everything to get mine to stay on the shoe and it won’t.

Hey, I just saw this -- I'm sure you've figured something out by now. But just in case you or others still have problems with it, as I recall, there are two tabs on the back of the cable guide, and if it is loose, you can bend the tabs inward before putting it on the shoe. You then have to spread it a little bit to get it in the shoe, but it stays in place. Now that you mention it, I believe I ran into this problem as well on the first one that I did.
