I think the moral of the story is: Himedanshi stay losing because men are only allowed to enjoy feminine stuff when it's "sexualized" because of other men but also because of women who feel so (often rightfully) preyed on by men that they'll attack any men who dips his toes into "their" territory. I also feel like assuming that males can't self-insert as female characters and vice versa (without either one being trans/"trans without knowing it yet") is really holding people back. That being said, any attack on yuri ecchi as "male gaze" seems needlessly homophobic and shouldn't be tolerated. Yes, they're are lesbian yuri mangaka, yes, there are homophobic woman who also happen to be yuri/yaoi mangaka. Both are real but trying to categorize every yuri we get as drawn by either one is just not helping any cause and will have more misses than hits so it's better to just enjoy the show or drop it.

I find that zombie stories can be sometimes more interesting than regular death stories since we can never be too sure that this kind of coping mechanism can happen. Sure there are people who keep ashes but a whole lifeless body? It's so blatant, gruesome, and telling of people whove gone though too much grief in their life

Even if we take the fruity context aside, I think Rikka’s jealousy was handled and explained well. Especially because DokiDoki is technically a kids show, and jealousy is very common among children. (The mother and wife analogies are pretty crazy tho 🤭.)

There is an episode very late in the season where Rikka is separated from Mana for awhile because Mana gets an academic opportunity that she has to be away for (turns out to be a Jikochu scam but anyway). There is a scene where Rikka wins a little frog prize from a claw machine and shouts “Look Mana, I won!” And everyone is just staring at Rikka like, “Girl what? 😦” The entire episode is so fruity lol.

It's very easy to interpret Doki as a yuri harem anime because of how bad Rikka, Alice, Makopi, and a future character (hiding just in case video poster didn't make it that far) have it for Mana. Alice hides it the best and doesn't show off any jealousy, but this episode pretty much implied that she dealt with her personal issues regarding Mana and her tendency to get close to other girls before the series began. I can't help but love Doki Doki a lot; it's so much fun.

I haven't got that far yet but i don't doubt you. However, sometimes when something is a children's show made by a massive corporation the gayest thing they can do is panic and backtrack as fast as possible because they saw the artists get a little too comfortable lol. There's also plenty of ways for a sapphic girl to like/appear to like a boy and still be sapphic. Mana is, as bandai namco would put it, "open to interpretation" lol.

8:07 I'm similarly confused when I hear about straight women watching lesbian p0rn. I can't watch that at all. But I'm a straight yuri fan myself. And I can, though I usually just read/watch fluff yuri, read more explicit material. Not into really kinky stuff though, I'm pretty vanilla. I can't speak for every straight himejoshi but for me I think it's because it's fictional so my brain isn't really thinking about the fact that the sex is between women. Because they don’t look like real women. And recently I was reading an article about HOCD (Homosexual Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) for other orientations it would be just SO OCD, SO = Sexual Orientation. Anyway the article was about Heterosexuals that thought they might be gay. In it the author mentioned that even though these people are heterosexual, sex itself or people acting sexually can arouse them. So I think that might be part of it. Though I wouldn't doubt that most of the girls that put sexual arousal as their reason are actually lesbian or bi.

Good list (I've read like 75% of the suggestions already so I know they're good lol). This might not come across as clearly to someone who's not a big isekai reader, but Onee sama to watashi also acts as a big parody of Narou-kei tropes (Narou-kei more accurately describes the recent crop of fantasy isekai we're all so familiar with) which might not come off as clearly to a non-isekai reader. Though, it's clearest inspirations show their colors a bit later on in the manga so I'll leave you to read it yourself.

Good video It always did bother me seeing people call it male gaze when like... there's no men? And the story only works if you're on the same page as the female characters. Like you could apply this much easier to stories with a male pov character. Also I didn't know people read vena as male tbh, I always viewed Venalita as a genderless alien tbh. Though I suppose I am speaking as a man watching this, I like it for the good reasons I promise! Or something, I've been a fan since the anime got announced and that was when I was convinced to give the manga a second shot. It's something that some people probably won't believe me if I say so but do love the manga wholeheartedly tbh. I'd rather not wallow in shame when the people saying those things don't even get the series themselves.

Also will you talk more in-depth about your thoughts on the shoujo label? Maybe even some alternative words we should consider?
@YuriAngyo
2 ай бұрын
If you mean shoujo ai, my issue with it is that it's a term made up in the west to make yuri more like yaoi (yaoi had shounen ai vs yaoi, romance vs smut). I'm not like an anime purist or anything, but the issue is that it equates 2 genres that are very different and plows a line right down the middle of one with no regards for how the stories are written. When separating a genre of romance into romance vs smut, if the stories aren't being written to fit into one box or another it's gonna be a messy cut that needlessly divides the genre anyway. Hell, I'm pretty sure bl authors have mostly stopped doing it *because* it's so limiting and just call everything bl now instead of the more loaded terms. And i just hate yuri getting treated like girl yaoi anyway, gl and yuri are interchangeable terms but i prefer yuri when talking abt jp yuri because gl is more of a marketing term. While with yaoi vs bl, I'm no bl expert but I've heard there's been a lot of contention over whether yaoi should stop getting used, since it's an acronym for an insult (calling it all porn without plot). But yuri doesn't have that baggage since it was taken from gay magazines and decided on by a bunch of queer yuri authors and fans in the early 2000s. The other problem with shoujo ai is that it *does* have a meaning in jp, but it's not the lesbian version of shounen ai. It's love for little girls, usually by adult men and idk if it's just a porn culture or like a term used by active pedophiles but i don't wanna touch it either way lol. Wataten or Master and Mel can be shoujo ai, but i don't want that connection made between general yuri and pedophilia even if it's not something most people will see both definitions of. It's easy to test too, just put shoujo ai in japanese in a search engine and after a couple stray yuri pics from presumably english speakers it's just AV actresses with baby faces and loli art. As for why i didn't mention madoka, my fantasy list was getting a bit full and i figured enough people knew and loved madoka it'd make it's way to the comments somehow 😅 and it did. I just figured for my tasting menu i wanted to list stuff i don't see mentioned as much. There's a few that are still super popular in there i know, but if i had to choose between a popular thing that's been on my mind vs a pretty obscure thing i chose the obscure one. And i just now realized i could have put it in my analysis list but oh well lol.

WHERE IS MADOKA 😭
@Blue-hx8qu
2 ай бұрын
The series Puella Magi Madoka Magica is technically subtext but it's also crystal clear about queer love and it's important to its plot and themes, although be warned it slaps you with a "my best friend" near the end. The sequel movie Rebellion is textual and very powerful, a masterpiece. Also Magia Record. Most Madoka Magica fans didn't like it because it's not a 10/10 like the original and fans of the gacha didn't like it because it wasn't a low-stakes story like the game, so it sits in a weird limbo where most people haven't given it the chance it deserves. There are many different flavours of yuri, many different pairings, and while it's all subtext it managed to amp it up compared to PMMM (I mean there's not even a single guy in Magia Record).
@Blue-hx8qu

Also while on the topic of doomed yuri: Signalis It's an anime-styled survival horror game (Resident Evil and Silent Hill like), the yuri is textual and central to the plot. Be warned that it's also a brain parasite that will permanently embed itself in your brain. It has a great and active community too, very useful to feed the brainworm and as a support group.

As a currently male, but potentially trans female (on my own journey of self discovery rn, why must that be so hard to figure out), ive fallen into the unfortunate habit of second guessing my own intentions when enjoying media recently. am i enjoying it because it features women as good characters, like what i think/hope i could be, or is it because im just a guy that likes to ogle female bodies. Male gaze is something that i had seen floating around, but never had gotten a proper explanation for, so my heartfelt thanks for an easy to understand rundown on what it *actually* entails, not only as a buzzword on the internet. as an aside, my first reaction to the gender debate of yuri authors being to pause and say out loud "what does it matter, if they write a good story, they write a good story", i shall take a sign that all hope is not yet lost for me ^^

I cover it in the video, it's androgynous leaning feminine too. At least if my amateur jp skills and the plushie fuckers on pixiv aren't lying. Def kind of an author insert (maybe a strange comparison but sorta like hansum in not so shoujo love story in terms of role) but its perspective and individuality is completely secondary to the girls. It's a machiavellian little bastard, but more in the kyuubey (mysterious, untrustworthy) way than the Light way.
