Guess you could say they're sounding a bit less "*Powerful*" here without a certain beloved red-headed bassist, backing vocalist, and occasional songwriter

I was lookin' through my window I was lookin' through my eyes And there's a big black car coming Get off the street outside - come in Go into a pipe-dream no-one listens anyway When I say I'm so sad about, not so glad about I'm so mad - I can't sleep tonight I was going through a nightmare I was layin' on the line And there's a big black train coming D'you think it would be a shame running Go into a bathroom No-one looking anyway When I say I'm so sad about, not so glad about I'm so mad - I can't sleep tonight I was looking through my window I was looking through my eyes And there's a big black cloud coming Get off the street outside - come in Go into a pipe-dream no-one listens anyway When I say I'm so sad about, not so glad about I'm so mad - I can't sleep tonight

I was in the record store year was 1990 it was Christchurch New Zealand and this guy from behind the counter shoved the La’s CD into my hand and said to me you need to buy this and I said why and he said because it’s fucking amazing and if you don’t like it I’ll buy it back off you!!! I still have it to this day…

I absolutely love this song. This isn’t a particularly good middle section, too many twiddly bits from John which I feel took away from its sparse majesty.

I’d do so in a heartbeat, giving up all advances in tech, communications, automotive, medicines etc. Life was better prior to closing the circle on always-on connectedness & geolocation. And other massive advantages: 1. Liberal democracy wouldn’t have been crushed by a ‘virus’ & ‘vaccines’, all enabled by the modern world of tech……and age-old human frailties. 2. I might get to see The La’s live ♥️

That ending is truly shocking, supernaturally climactic. I got goosebumps upon watching the band's name printed on the bass drum as the lights flickered chaotically over it. And most astonishing was how Mavers was all calm and detached while everything was exploding about him. Sensational, to say the least.

Hard to say how great they were as they never reached their full potential, but they are my favourites band after The Beatles.
