I drive a Ruby Red 1.9 JTS (yes, it does exist) in Ireland. It's almost 20 years old and people still turn around when I drive by; Kids are especially mesmerized by it (and I guess, the fact it sounds quite nice compared to the average diesel knock coming from most cars). They're now extremely rare in EIRE (I read somewhere that there are less than 20 remaining in the entire country), so often it has a similar effect as if an UFO just showed up in the car park. And even if I own one, the rare time I cross path with another one driving around, it immediately catches my attention, even if I only get a glimpse of it in my peripheral vision, due to how different it looks to saloons of other brands - a friend described it as "if someone put wheels on a shark" 🤣

They can be quite expensive cars to repair/maintain properly and therefore are neglected. Loads of cheap dross that shouldn't be saved (with newbie owners then moaning to the hilltops) but scrapped. YT is full of these projects and see what they spend on them so it reinforces the tale about reliability. Alfa don't do themselves any favours either with awful service, asking stupid money for many parts, a reluctance to have recalls when they damn well should (GM chain and gearbox failure on some petrols) and their insistence on halting production on spares almost immediately.I've had to pay Ferrari prices for some parts in the past. Come on 😂 absolutely ridiculous state of affairs. If they care about changing this they need a huge change in attitude and goodwill gestures/accommodation to owners of older vehicles from service and parts supply/pricing. I see evidence of none of it. It's a vicious circle that's not easily rectified at this point.

Don't do what I did. Sell the 156 because the boot is small for a family of 4, and buy the only 159 available around, because it's kind of cheap, but not thoroughly test drive it. Missed break vibration, missed clutch issues which ended up needing to be replaced, flywheel included (according to the mechanics) - which is not cheap. It's also very different from the 156, much less of a driver's car, but you can get used to it.

I have just got a 159,blackline edition black and silver and 18in teledials just waiting on the refurbished guy,so it's a beautiful thing 2.0 litre petrol engine is very strong,and it's like new inside and the back seats look like they have never been sat in,and it's got the leather interior and a kenwood screen with reverse camera and it's multifunctional with phone,steering wheel a,bose stereo,system and a lot of other options I've only had a stainless steel exhaust fitted and the best alarm system, nitrogen filled tyres but it's easy,to top them up with normal air it only dilutes the nitrogen particles,which is to keep the same pressure just takes longer to dissipate than air,so when we get to a track day OK but if you take care of your tyre's then air will suffice for now and we can drive without any spine shattering potholes.to truly enjoy your alfa on the right road to appreciate the car and it's a joy to manhandle on b roads,and it's amazing to drive and to be a real car to cherish and I don't know of anyone else who has seen one I'm constantly asked what it is.

Thanks for the walk around, your car looks lovely, and I hope you've now forgiven your wife! I managed to buy a red 159 TBi with biscuit leather interior last April. It's been a labour of love, with many thousands spent (including subframes, suspension arms, bushes, drop links, engine mount, oil heat exchanger, head rebuild, fuel lifter pump, air-conditioning pipe plus more). Surprising really given the 49k miles on the clock; I think the gearbox will be next given the sound of the wine it makes. But I can forgive every penny each time I walk up to get into it. I agree, without doubt, one of the best looking (and handling) cars on the road.

One on the drive( i drove over it ha). So new exhaust. New discs all round an pads. New suspension all round. Sat idle for a year. Then my son needed it. So back to work in it. Had to do some welding for mot. But it passed. Now however it has other issues. Got steering pump,water pump/ belt kit,filters etc. And two newtrack rod ends. ! Phew. Does it ever stop? Had a freind with a brera gt. He spent over £15 k on it. But its still a nice drive. Good looking car. Even now. Good luck.

It's just cosmetics. So long as it's kept rust free you can do paint and bodywork as time and budget allow. The leather doesn't even appear to have started coming off the doorcards and it has a quaife diif and new clutch. For the steering wheel get a good leather sew on steering wheel cover. Takes awhile to sew up but the result is quite professional looking, while protecting the original wheel underneath. The first question with these engines is ,'when was the timing belt done?' The only thing I would suggest is fitting a set of stainless steel exhaust manifolds. Not for the marginal power gain but to get rid of those two massive heatsinks masquerading as pre cats out of the engine bay. The heat they generate causes untold premature damage to hoses and wiring and the ECU sits practically on top of the rear unit.

I’m surprised how the wing mirror glass on yours has no corrosion as most 156 and 159 models do.Stone chips are a bugger big time,as the bonnet is fairly low and long.Issues can include brittle coolant bottles,cam lid covers splitting and the gear box in the 159 tbi 1750cc arent the best.And the interior is a bit plastic fantastic .Saying all of that my 2011 plate tbi lusso 1750cc has been very reliable thus far.Mines been mapped from 198 hp to 240 hp ,however don’t expect a roaring beast as it’s fairly quiet.However once it gets going ,it can keep up with newer cars .The curb weight is fairly heavy due to the lump underneath the bonnet,so does not pull away mega quick .After all it’s a saloon and is perfect for motorway cruising ,although surprisingly holds country roads and bends fairly well.Overall out of the 5 Alfas I have owned the 159 1750cc tbi is my favourite .
@DVGTS1

The curb weight is actually fairly light for the 1750 tbi. It's only FWD and weighs 1500kg with all fluids. 1430kg bone dry. The 3.2 V6 Q4 was heavy at 1695 kg with all fluids, on the other hand. Between the two, I'm glad I picked the 1750 tbi. It still goes fast enough, and is actually reliable.

Always loveditalian design and really got my passion going with the Brera, that front gaze it has, the design cues and silouette, oh lord. I've been looking around but needed something more practical and in steps in the 159, essentially the same design platform etc. Such an original timeless design. My only query are about the engines. The diesels were popular so easier to get but after owning diesels I'm after a petrol, and tbh such don't make sense to me with diesels. So, theres a lot of information out there on the build and reliablity of the petrol variants. Which ones would be a safe bet, knowing they still need maintaining well. I cant go top end, but something reasonable and what mileage is safe on them too? Thanks

Mileage, mine is on 113k and engine still runs fantastic. out of the petrol engines available, the 1.8 tbi is the better engine, more HP, more reliable and more economic but are a rarity these days. Nothing wrong the 2.2 engine, just make sure its been cared for with servicing etc the usual checks.

I had one, lovely looking car with an amazing engine but it was a complete money pit! Some stuff to look out for what I had to replace on mine. 1. Water pumps are prone to fail unless replaced with the ones with a metal impeller. 2. Keep on top of the cam belt services. 3. Upgrade to the LSD if it doesn’t already have one, mine went bang the week after I ordered mine before I was fitted which blew a hole in the gearbox. 4. You mentioned a water leak, I upgraded the lower coolant pipe with a stainless one. 5. Check the rear shockers, the spring pan rusted through on mine and collapsed on the motorway blowing out a tire. 6. Suspension is made out of chocolate so will knock and squeek, so your forever changing arms etc. 7. I replaced the thermostat cause mine stuck open all the time, just look out for water temps cooling when on a long run. 8. The ECU’s are also a known issue if I remember correctly, mine never suffered with this but worth reading about. Amazing cars when they work properly, good luck and I will keep my fingers crossed for you bud. 😂

I replaced both belts, all of the pulleys and the water pump, replaced rear shocks and springs, whole front suspension and it runs fine. No problem since I bought it, except the failure of the driver's side window control module, which cost me 50 euros for a spare part from the junkyard. I also bought 1 dollar relay for the control module to replace it on the failed one, and have a reserve one ready to go. The clutch pedal is stiff since I bought it, but it's same three years later. Currently I use it as daily driver and this is a car that is most anti-money pit car I had. Moat reliable car ever!

@@jamesalexanderbarnettdp9479 Yeah, others have told me the same about the clutch. Also I already got used to it. And of course, there is huge difference in maintenance price of the diesel and the 3.2 busso... There is difference in the price of the car too. I would like to own 3.2 one day, or at least drive one to experience it but now after I married and have my first child, it's even more difficult to go into it. The diesel one is still perfect for me. I went 1032km in one tank without any refuel on open country roads climbing even a mountain, over 2000m (which means more fuel consumption). And that it's crazy for a car that has decent power and feel sporty and looks awesome 😎 I am happy that it's relatively rust free, except for some spots on the sills which are of no concern for me. I previously had 156 and 159 models and the 159 had the most problems. Vdc failure, clutch failed without any previous signs, bottom engine mount failed, steering rack failed, crankshaft pulley failed and I don't remember what else... All of this on 210.000km.
