2:13 - Yoshinobu Miyake (and his brother, Yoshiyuki, and his niece Hiromi) were all great lifters. 4:01 - The GREAT Baszanswski was an inspirational lifter. Sadly his life turned tragic at the end. 7:57 - Viktor Kurentsov was always a favorite of mine. 12:54 - Norb Shemansky was a total tool even at 39. This took place after back surgery where he had several vertebra fused.

I was there in Columbus Ohio, 1970. Ivanchenko was something to see, for sure. but David Rigert's 3rd C&J was the gutsiest lift I have ever seen. He missed his first two attempts and after an unbelievable hard recovery from the clean he made the Jerk. From that humble beginning he went on the be one of the best ever at 90 Kg.

They Did Jeff Really Bad!!! Although I Was Only 8 During The Time Of This Meet. The Rest Of The World Didn't Want An American To Medal In The Following Years Olympic Games In L.A. They Made An Example Out Of Jeff. He Wasn't Guilty Of Anything More Than What The Eastern European Athletes Were Doing. Politics And Sports Go Hand In Hand... Unfortunately! I Met Jeff 11 Years Later In 1994. He Would Have Won Gold Or Silver Had They Not Derailed Him 👌🏿. He Was "TRULY" A Great Lifter💪🏿!!

Three sad points of Olympic Weightlifting: 1. Not NCAA sanctioned...can't attract SCHOLARSHIP ATHLETES LIKE WRESTLING, GYMNASTICS ETC. 2. NOT HIGH SCHOOL SPORT EITHER. 3. WHY ? USA WEIGHTLIFTING FEDERATION WON'T DO ANYTHING TO BUILD THE SPORT EXCEPT CHARGE COACHING AND REFEREE CERTIFICATION. BIG DEAL.

Bob Hoffman summarized these games in Strength and Health Magazine. Notable was his take on Zhabotinski's fake out, pretending to be injured, which apparently gave Vlasov a sense that he had gold in the bag. And we know what happened next.

I had the pleasure of training with Fred a few times at Coffee's Gym. Needless to say that he was an incredible lifter, but Fred is also quite a nice guy. He put up some impressive masters lifts and ran at least one full marathon if my memory serves me. I enjoyed training with his daughter, Casey, as well. Hopefully they are doing well these days.

That's the first time I've actually seen Jeff's 187.5. It's clearly one of the best lifts ever by an American. I was in a meet or two with Jeff and trained with him a few times at Coffee's gym. I hope he is well and still lifting!
