Should have coated the bottom of the post with roofing tar and wrapped it with 30 lb. felt prior to putting concrete around it. The moisture trapped between the concrete and the wood will destroy a wood post in no time even if it is pressure treated.The felt would create a drainage plane for he water to either wick or drain away and the tar would keep the wood from getting saturated with water. The bottom of the post needs to be on gravel.

Most difficult step is putting the rectangular hole through the posts... How do you make it so clean? What saw was used?

Hi there great video just wondering on the plans it says for the hashira to be of 3600 Long pieces but contradicts itself by stating the above ground height of the hashira to be 2400, could you tell me what length you used for yours ?

Have you tried Etsy? Or possibly a home decor store. I haven't seen anything exactly like that but you might find something that looks close in the metal wall art sections.

CONCRETE IS A BAD IDEA ..THE POST ROTS FASTER
@01WALKER01

I doubt it'll make much difference either way. With the loose sandy soil we have here it is typical to see posts set in concrete. If the posts were set in gravel or just the soil the gate would most likely fall over with the high wind load. If you had a heavier soil or less wind, perhaps that would work to prevent the posts from rotting faster. It's rare to see treated wood posts this size set in concrete fail in less than 15 years anyhow. I'd be interested to hear how it's done in other parts of the country though.

REALLY? WHAT ABOUT THE MONSTER TORII'S IN JAPAN? DO YOU THINK THEY'RE SET IN CEMENT WITH ALL THE EARTH QUAKES THERE ALSO? AND SOME ARE HUNDREDS OF YEARS OLD.

I am not familiar with the type of wood, local soils or regional construction techniques in Japan so I can't comment on that - maybe one day when I have some time to research that further, not just watch a KZitem video, it'll reveal the differences between setting a post in the ground here vs. there. Until then, this is how we do it here and I haven't personally seen it done any other way so I am not sure how to test your theory that the wood will rot substantially faster with concrete. You should test it in your region and let me know what you find.

Prepperleper's advice would seem to make sense since there's a lot of alkalai in cement. However, we just replaced a gate that was basically the same construction as yours, PT 4x4 in concrete. Originally installed in 1983, the portion of the post embedded in the concrete was still completely sound. Climate probably should factor into the decision as to what method to use... here in Georgia where it's very wet, I think the benefit of having a water barrier around the post outweighs what little damage the concrete might do.

this isnt going to stand long.. 3 reasons why. 1 A female looks to take most credit 2 its a blonde female and 3 you gotta mix the cement before pouring it.

Clearly you know nothing about construction if you think that: 1. Being a female with dyed hair has anything to do with the project. And 2. You don't have to mix the cement.

you don't need to mix mortar .but would have been best to pour a bit water into the Hole first...should still be OK though.
