So happy to see Walt Jr. found something amazing and impressive to do with the money his dad left him, jk, all love, great job on the trip and editing. That line of trees reaches all the way South. I remember crossing the Mississippi and all of a sudden the only thing for miles and miles was forest. Cat's probably a mouser btw, you start an engine and any vermin scatter out of the cracks of long stored aircraft... he hangs out underneath to catch them.

Your parents must be incredibly proud of you! The maturity and focus you demonstrate as a young man will serve you to great benefit throughout your life. I'm 47 and just starting my journey to get my pilots license. You are quite the inspiration. May good fortune and favorable winds be with you! Subscribed and I look forward to seeing more of your videos!

So he's getting ~4 gallons/hr flying 100 mph... that's really good. I'd be curious if any cars out there can manage 25 mpg at 100 mph (of they could maintain that speed for an hour... maybe the autobahn?).

Surely they make certified aircraft engines with roughly the same weight, and probably more hp, that would salve this problem. I think he's tired of this project and wants to upgrade. Can't say I blame him. I bet it was a fun project, but it seams like sort of a flimsy, somewhat sketchy plane. Having the crank shaft breaking and prop coming off, it's a good time to to walk away from this one, if he wasn't really happy with it's capabilities/ handling/ safety.

Damn.. this sucks man. Just watched your cross country video and was very happy for you, then this one came on lol. Sorry for the loss of your plane. I know it must have felt crushing but at least you are safe and did an amazing job on the ER landing. Best of luck on your future and keep living the dream!

I had a thought. The comments about the AeroVee not having a proper thrust bearing and you wanting something with a certified engine are spot on... but I don't think you have to part with the Sonex, if you've got the dosh. Sonex themselves make a mount kit for a Rotax 912, which is a certified - and mostly bulletproof - engine. You've got the same 80hp, the same 4.3gph fuel burn... the only potential problem is it's considerably lighter, which while on the face of it is a good thing, maaaaay give you a CG problem. (Potentially fixed by moving the battery forward, or the like, if it's not already up front.) (Sonex *should* know what affect this will have, but it wasn't obvious on their mounts page.) This would give you reliability on an airframe you've already personally tested and like *and* give you and your mom the peace of mind of a certified engine. And doing the mod will give you valuable experience as an amateur mechanic, something you need if you're going to keep the bird in shape... and there's a plethora of people who know Rotaxes and can help you out if you get stuck. The one gotcha I would caution you about is - and this is true with *any* installation - be *very* careful installing the new propeller. There's a hundred ways to screw it up, and the last thing we want is "oh, no, not again." The Rotax I'm not worried about; it should Just Work, and it should tell you right off if something's wrong. The prop, not so much... Whatever you decide to do, you're the one that's gotta be comfortable behind the stick. Best of luck getting back in the air, however you do it!

I just finished converting a Sonex from a Volkswagen engine to a rotax. You don't need a certified engine that is a 1935 design, you need a modern engine like an Austrian rotax.

As a fellow pilot, this not a trivial failure. Be thankful that the whole thing came off as if it was a single blade failure you probably wouldn't be posting this video as that can rip the motor out and well then the airplane instantly goes way out of CG limits Aft and we know that's pretty much non recoverable. Great panel modifications! I'm on the tail end of my journey, but can say aviation was life changing for me when I started at 15 and licensed at 17 back in the mid 1970s. It changed my life for good in so many ways and also opened up doors for me along the way. Keep at it and stay safe. BTW that looks like one squirrelly airplane 😎
