I've been watching some vids on lead burning/welding; being a newbie to lead welding/burning; your vid explains the getting the flame just right better than some of the seasoned lead workers!

We use code 5 on most chimney back gutters. 5 and above on lead valleys/bays

Oh dear, that's going to leak. You didn't put any Plumbers Mait on the underside of that waste fitting, tut, tut. It's needed between the porcelain and that plastic washer!! Embarrassing 🙄🙄🙄👎
@darwinsape9901

Apply the PTFE tape in a "clockwise" direction to the waste fitting. This will give a water tight seal when tightening the back nut. If the PTFE tape is applied 'anti-clockwise'.. the PTFE water seal on the thread of the waste fitting will be compromised as the back nut will want to remove the tape as it is tightened up..
@zedman442

Hmm that will leak from the overflow slot. Problem is rarely from the basin waste itself but always from the overflow. The only thing that is stopping water slip through the thread is that ptfe and that is just not going to stop it. What I normally use is a dry fit basin mate. No leaks as this seals the thread of the wast to the basin.

Ptfe tape works perfectly! I use ptfe tape for radiator tails where the central heating flow is under one bar of pressure and they don't leak!!

Not sure what makes you say 'always use code 4 lead for roofing'. Thats not right.We use code 4 for cover flashings but code 5 for many applications such as valleys, gulleys, box gutters and lead flat roofs and its these applications that often need some welding . I hardly ever weld code 4 lead apart from maybe box gutters behind chimneys. also its much easier welding code 5 lead than it is to weld code 4. But nice vid, thanks

I'm in the process of learning to weld lead and find this video informative. I've clicked on all the commentators links here and not one has any video giving explanations on lead welding.... yet your happy to knock someone who has taken time to film and upload a 'guide' on lead welding. All the commentator links on here seem to be of playing with toys - grown up toys.. so mature up a little and contribute some videos instead of trying to knock someone who is actually giving knowledge and trying to help others. If your all so good at what you do why are you watching lead welding videos on You Tube? and then taking the time to write negative comments? to make yourself feel better? Thank you for this video and I hope practice makes perfect for me.

Hi Roland, Indeed the plumbers mate is just there to protect the basin, as would the silicone/rubber seal if supplied. As a water tight seal is not needed on the top part of the waste fitting. Although if this is not water tight the basin will slowly empty if the plug is left in, so it is good to have a water tight seal at the top end of the waste fitting.
@roller995

Thanks for that. Very helpful. Some of the basins come with a silicone / rubber seal. Are these fine to be used instead of the Plumbers mate? I assume the reason for the Plumbers mate purely there to ensure that the metal doesn't touch the porcelain? If there is an overflow cutout, the top seal wouldn't have to seal the water since any water draining from the basin would fill up the little space between the overflow cutout and the bottom seal in any case.

Couple of points James; We use mainly Code 5 Lead here in Scotland & anything up to Code 8 on some jobs. Do you not 'tack' your but welds & we would give it three runs, burn in & two welds of Herringbone. But hey, each to their own. Thanks for sharing.

Known in Scotland as 'burning in' or 'first run'. Then you'd do a second & even a third run with filler rod. As others have said, easy doing it on a bench, try doing it on-site with a force 9 gale up your kilt???

Shouldn't a lead weld be 3 times the thickness of your lead sheet
@ollie51164lead
13 жыл бұрын
In 27 years of lead roofing I have never not used a filler rod on flat welding, sometimes I use a double weld over the 1st run if it was expansion joint for instance. if I get a chance I will load up some on site welding done in real situations rather than a college bench. Check out the lead sheet assn guidelines as I doubt very much if what you are showing is in there. Nothing personal just you need to teach kids the correct methods. (As I assume you are a lecturer?)

Dont be frightened to try something, just seen the end of ur vid, I could easily rip that apart, try an aluminium plate under (thick one) .if you check with HSE they will recomend barrier cream, then gloves. Also overalls and mask, I have worn gloves and masks for the last 7 or 8 years and my lead levels have come right down, I hate overalls though and just cant wear them :(

Gloves...always, a little tip.. try a size 3 nozzle instead of your size 2, and if you hold your gun at an angle the other way pointing into your work you will penetrate through the entire sheet, if it's too hot for you introduce a sideways or circular motion as well. Unfortunately you have just melted lead on top of it.

That is acknowledged when he says the strength of his weld is in the high dome he builds.
