John Reed was what got me hooked all my life on G&S. At age 7, my grandmother gave me the D'Oyly Carte Mikado on LP. Twenty years later, I actually met Reed during one of the company's last international tours after a performance of Iolanthe at L.A.'s Greek Theater. He was gracious and unassuming, pleased to know how much he'd influenced my life. A true gentleman in the classic mold. I'll hear his voice in my ears with intense fondness until my dying day.

I just watched the first couple of minutes of a hideous recent Australian production of Mikado! But only the first couple of minutes. The first couple of minutes of this production are better than any number of minutes of the other!!! Mikado must be the only G&S in which it takes 26 minutes to introduce any female characters!!!

The song is much older than that. The mikado was originally a play by gilbert and sullivan, first shown in 1885. The lyrics are pretty much the same in this version except for the emission of a few words.

What a delight! I have listened to the London audio recording for years and never thought I'd actually get to see some of those performers in a filmed D'Oyly Carte production, such as John Reed, Kenneth Sandiford, Valerie Masterson, and Pauline Wales. (The entire cast was wonderful.) I watched it while following along in my annotated libretto (highly recommended to catch all of the clever humor). It was interesting to see where they cut a few of the longer and slower songs short, presumably to reduce the overall runtime (fine with me). Thank you so much for posting this. I will watch it again and again. Do you know if there are similar films of any other D'Oyly Carte productions?

John Reed WAS the quintessential G&S baritone - splendid! I saw a production of this in Houston in the mid '80s . . . all VE-RY Modern and Up-to-Date . . . by the English National Opera! The Great Spaghetti God only knows why, but they saw fit to give Katisha an airplane pilot, who mooned (would the Brits say "swanned"?) about on stage . . . and when at the end She was handed over to Koko, the pilot "plunged himself into the billowy wave . . ." - and not a moment too soon, IMHO!!

KoKo. Has there ever been a more selfless character in all literary history? Gives up his engagement to Yum Yum so Yum Yum and Nanki Poo can be happy, then saves Nanki Poo from either forced marriage or execution for denying Katisha by convincing her to marry him with a sad song about a suicidal bird.

So basically KoKo gave up his engagement to Yum Yum so Yum Yum and Nanki Poo could be happy, then saved Nanki Poo from having to marry or face execution for not marrying Katisha by convincing her to marry him through a sad song about a suicidal bird. Truly, there has never been a more selfless mfer in all of literature than KoKo.

@ chriswright4252 I met Christene Palmer in 1969 when she was appearing at the Alexandra Birmingham She and John Reed visited the Cinemas I was Assistant Manager. at the end I invited them into the Office where I had a copy of "The Savoyard" by chance and asked them to sign it for me. In 1936 The Theatre my family had an interest in closed for demolition the Very last show was "The Mikado" The new cinema was called "The Savoy" Many years later I reopened a Cinema with Stage facilities and named it "The Savoy" and the first show was a G&S programme.

What does it mean “children who are up in dates and floor you with them flat?” I don’t get the Victorian lingo
@ripline6668

"Dates" refers to calendar dates, and the lyric itself refers to history students who know about a lot of historical events and flaunt off their knowledge by reciting precise details such as the dates on which they happened, and other minor matters

I wonder if they could ever produce a modern update with actual Japanese actors. This is a tough one because even though it is set in Japan, it's really a thinly veiled lampoon of Victorian Britain. So Japanese people don't want to be played by white people in makeup but British people see it as their story so IDK.

The late Stephen Sondheim owed a great debt to Gilbert and Sullivan. Their patter songs, with amazingly intricate rhymes and ratt a tatt pace, requiring singers to be on top of their game every moment, for every syllable?? He probably watched and listened to these. They are an utter joy, of course, but a real homage to that masterly art of singing and reciting...

Richard McMillan was the quintessential Pooh-bah played less than 20 years later in Stratford. What comedic gravitas he had. Seeing him live as Scar in Lion King and in his one-man play "Through The Eyes", he showed skill and grace I have yet to see matched.
