for a single unit it's pretty fast, but not as fast as what we operate, we do the AX5 by ASSEMBLEON. five carts with a total of 10 heads with each head having access to up to 50 different reels. and at the end we have an iFLEX machine to place bigger components like ic's, photo electric modules, and shields/cans. each head is slow compared to the one in the video. but they make up for it in numbers.

The back of the machine has two tables of component feeders loaded with each indivdual part value, type, size on it. That is why the head (turret) spins every time. The placement of the components is optimized based on the feeder table/PCB table travel and determines the fastest placement. I used to operate these machines at a large CM very interesting to operate.

how does this not end up in a mess of scattered components? The board shown gets jolted around like mad...
@vladsinger

Already has solder paste deposited on the pads before pick and place so the components are stuck down somewhat. Then it needs to be heated to melt the solder and form the permanent connection.

Also carefully managed acceleration patterns, and this machine will only place the smaller low mass components at that speed. ICs or electrolytics would absolutely fly off the board in this machine.

There is solder paste already on the pads and this machine places the componnets on them. After that it goes in a reflow oven to melt the solder.

na it is just placing the chips on the board, the board will get soldered by using some sort of solder bath i would imagine

You are probably right, if you look at the last fraction of a second you can see the feeders of the next machine. So more components are added there. Probably pick & place. I mistook the warning label on the entrance conveyor for a warning for hot surfaces, it's probably one that warns for jamming danger.

actually you can see a lot of the pads for qfp/qfn packages are still not populated. it looks like this machine placed only / mostly passives. It's probably going into another pick and place machine for ICs then off to reflow

On further review, at the end of the clip you can see the pcb board role into a reflow oven, so in this case it's set in solder paste. A paste made up out of fine solder ball's (little bigger then sand specks) and flux (flux deoxidises and helps solder flow fluently and adhere better). Hope it helped.

It's set in solder paste or on glue dot's. It's placed, not iserted ;)

how is a contact made between the chips and the board? Doesn't some soldering have to happen after the chips are inserted?
