I showed AJJ to my mother who was less than impressed. She commented that he wasn't a master guitarist like Hendrix and his vocals weren't particularly impressive either, and that she didn't have patience for bands like this, saying "of your not better at your craft just leave it to the people who are." I agrees that Sean is no Hendrix and his vocals will likely never be a match for Devin Townsend or dimash, but that's not what impressed me about his music to start with. I like bands like this for their passion. They have a message that's personal to them. They know exactly what they're trying to to convey and they do so with an unmatched passion. Sure they could write the music and sit around for the right artist to discover and hope that they understand the material and that the meaning doesn't get lost in whatever their personal interpretation is, but they didn't do that. Sean knows he isn't the most impressive artist of the century. He knows exactly what he sounds like. He makes music that means something to him. He plays it himself even tho there are more talented artists out there because he has something to say. He knows he's not the best but he does it anyway. The music speaks to everyone else out here who will never be number one. Just because somebody else could say it better is no reason to stay quiet when you have something to say. Speak your passion even when your afraid to. Only you know how you feel. Speak out loud and speak with passion. Never trust someone else to know how you feel or to speak for you. Be yourself. Know yourself, Love your flaws along with your strengths, they make you who you are.

Whenever I need to cry I come and watch this specific recording. This entire song is so emotional and raw but I think it's the togetherness of this specific performance that hits me so hard. It makes me feel less alone in these fears that feel so big, the way the crowd sings (sometimes screams) along. Especially the line "I'm afraid that the ones I love won't have enough" and the fact that it's repeated because it in and of itself is such a massive, overwhelming and crushing fear to have. It just hits. Also I want to give the person that yelled so passionately along to the line "and I'm afraid of the words in my notebook" a hug.

I appreciate that soo much! This is exactly why i took the video, this song has been with me for years and to see it live broke and rebuilt my heart in a lot of ways. The notebook line was me btw! I was insecure about it bc i sound so raw but it was truly euphoric in that moment. Thank you for this! please take care of yourself and have a good weekend <3

The lead singer of Pearl Jam once said that listening to the fans sing the chorus of Alive changed it for him. That all those people belting the words out took it from a cry of pain at being alive and changed it into a moment of pride. The chorus of voices changed it from a moment of one person's pain and made it into a group of people coming together to move past their own pain.

I think that that’s the overall message that the album is trying to convey. I’ve always interpreted Gift of the Magi 2: Return of the Magi as Sean (or anyone really) as that resurrected individual that was reborn alongside the big bird under the city with that big knife in hand. You die and are reborn stronger. The beginning stanza is a little indicative of this as well, “I used to be a dead guy, but now I’m a fucking Jedi”

I grew up in like, the middle of nowhere And I swore I would never go back My hometown was like the suburb of a suburb I actually lived on a cul-de-sac That's literally a road that goes nowhere That's the definition of dead end I said, "I can't wait to learn to do a three-point-turn" Because I don't wanna be here In four long years, I finished up with high school Graduated top of my class. Thank you! But in college I discovered that devising my own major Was a bureaucratic pain in the ass I thought I'd recontextualize Sartre But could only register for first-year French. Ha! Well, you should've heard my mom when I dropped the bomb And said, "I don't wanna be here No, I don't wanna be here." Now, I am not a negative person It's just that I've always known that I had places to go Dreams to fulfill and ideas to discover They're just never where I am So anyway, back at school I waited five semesters Till I could snag one of their random degrees I moved down south, ‘cause I heard everyone was hiring And they were. At the Applebee's They fired me, like, three weeks later My sublet promptly, whoops, fell through As I checked into a hotel, I said, "It's just as well Because I don't wanna be here No, I don't wanna be here." And I, I was not a negative person So I packed up my bags, though I had no place to go I opened a map and said, "Show me my future ‘Cause it isn't where I am." I finally got a job at some hum-drum office Like everyone right out of school does I sat there at my cubicle every day Sending faxes, and that's what my life was Oh, I went back home and said to my parents "I know what I've got to do." And since I am a dork I moved to New York And I started grad school I really don't wanna be here
