Just a heads up. Careful removing the CEL before getting a smog. They can see that and think you're trying to pull a sneaky
@jonsauce

Erasing the CEL resets the cars trip computers and emissions system. If you drive these old Honda around 55 mph for about 50 miles, it usually resets. They’re kinda picky but that’s what I’ve done in the past. For various cars, Acura and Honda 👍🏻

This was a little tricky replacement for me also. If I just went out and bought a Honda PLM-306 Air Fuel Ratio sensor to begin with, it wouldn't had been a problem at all(easy install). Same PO135 code and I didn't feel like paying the price for a factory sensor so got the Denso 234-9005 from Amazon(which they claim is the right sensor) and it didn't work. It fits and looks OK and the code goes away for a little drive but take notice what your Live Data is doing on your scan tool, it should be just about a flat line if the AFR sensor is working right. If the Live Data line is reading voltage up and down that is an O2 sensor. The 2004 and 2005 Honda Civics strictly calls for a Air Fuel Ratio Sensor for the B1S1 position which looks the same but are not the same. AFR sensors doesn't read the voltage as the O2 sensor on both sides of the Lambda does. AFR sensor reads a wider range and leaner range of mixtures(wideband). Yes the O2 sensor will fit into the 2001 to 2005 1.7 Civics but the 2004 and 2005 Civic are the two years that are tune to be used with the more expensive AFR sensors . We ran the 234-9005 and as soon as the engine went into closed loop it soon went back into open loop which then has your engine running in the default Data in you ECM since the ECM isn't getting the right signals by putting an O2 sensor into Bank 1 sensor 1 in the upstream spot where there is suppose to be a AFR wide range sensor. Cars are tuned and programed to run on a sensor designed for it, put the wrong sensor and the ECM with take note it is the wrong sensor and go back into open loop until you install the right sensor it was programed for. The Factory AFR sensor fixed the code a few years back and thousands of miles later and I shouldn't had to be cheap about it to begin with, lesson learned for me! We installed it into a 2005 Honda Civic LX, 1.7 non VTec with auto trans.

Is the upstream o2 sensor the bank 1 sensor 1, or is that the down stream? I’m currently showing P0135 and I’m considering installing a new o2 sensor.
@BlackCubone

Upstream is sensor 1, which is an A/F sensor for the 04-05 Civic. O2 sensors are significantly cheaper and probably worth replacing too.

Is this the only upstream sensor (AF sensor) for this engine? I have the same but is a 04 Civic Lx manual 5 speeds, I've seen another videos removing the sensor but is on another location, in the exhaust behind the engine.
@mikeortiz2139

I believe it is the only Upstream sensor. This sensor is Bank 1 Sensor 1 Code P0135. The other one you are referencing is after the Catylic Converter, Downstream, that's the Bank 1 Sensor 2 A/F Ratio Sensor. That one should be a P0141 code.

Thanks for nice video and clear explanations. I want to correct one point by the way: even before removing the faulty O2 sensor, if you use an OBDII device to clear the code, the code goes away temporarily. So, clearing the code using the OBDII device doesn't show that the problem is solved.

Should I be worried that the Code is only Periodic. And does NOT come back on right away once cleared. Which sucks because I don't know right away if the sensor fixed the problem. The shop I go to said it's probably failing but that's only going by the code not any inspection. It's been doing this off and on for maybe 6 months. A week ago being the most recent. From what I see (visually) the wiring looks fine. Once I take it out is there a way to tell if the part is going by look of it?
@SomnoNaut
4 жыл бұрын
After resetting the car must go through a full drive cycle to test all the sensors and some take longer than others. This sensor is about the 4th one tested and usually either fails or passes. If it fails the system stops checking the later sensors. If it passes, the 4th circle is illuminated OK and the test goes on. the last two sensors usually need 25-50 miles of driving to finish testing. So that might be why you are finding the code "periodic" as it takes that many miles to fully complete. You more than likely have other sensors that need to be addressed.
