The 90’s is considered to be the last greatest decade in history. We can never expect anything to come from pop culture that can even remotely resemble or compare to what we had back then. Values were different and authentic. We had a sense of morals and family and doing the right thing. Unfortunately we no longer live in a world like that and neither do I he children of today. There is no innocence now. With that being said I am incredibly grateful to have been born in the 80’s like the original bmw cast and grew up with such great programming in the 90’s.

It had a chance, at that pivotal moment when they could have turned things around with Maya and Lucas, but the moment they decided that Riley couldn’t lose because she was the daughter of the former main couple, that's when they truly failed. Riley was a spoilt brat who would never know what real life was like or what it is to experience real loss because everyone around her was enabling her always. That’s where they could've turned things around and made it unique but they weren't willing to take the plunge and thus they could never rise above either the previous show or any other Disney channel, generic show.

Boy Meets World was teaching the audiance lessons but not directly and that was the best thing about, it kept me rewatich it on youtube alot and it has a family freandly enviorment like most of the shows on the 90s and till the end of 2000s. I delt with racisem on camera but when that topic was on girl meets world, the audiounce did not see it but the charecters talked about it unlike the epsoid on Boy Meets World when they delt with racism, and sexisem they had displayed on camera, so i felt as a white young girl it was a bad thing to be a rude to people who come from other culter, have other skin colour than I do.

bmw was a show that could never be duplicated, the attempt to make a sequel GMW was sadly enough not met with the same love as BMW. But can u blame the public? NO!!! In BMW their was a sorta feeling to it and atmosphere, comedy and subliminal teachings about life. the cast was superb and could actually act! GMW did not have all that and felt forced.

as someone who grew up with this show, (me and my bestie used to play riley and maya at recess in elementary school) i feel that one of the biggest problems is that all of the main characters feel like one-dimensional on paper character tropes that were seen in 90s/2000s media. like maya was essentially the peyton sawyer of the show, but without any of the depth. farkle was the "lovable" geek, lucas was the heartthrob, and riley was the dreamer. none of these characters were explored any more than these labels, leading to them feeling fake and annoying. the writers liked to pretend the characters had so much depth and nuance, but in reality, there wasn't any because they didn't take the time to explore any of it

Girl Meets World was doomed as soon as it was on Disney. I know they own the rights. But off the bat they were doing references to Boy Meets World, when the kids watching Disney then either never seen or weren't even born during the reruns of BMW. Another channel could have used the original actors to pass the touch so to speak in the first season then go on. Also Disney is too hands on and when the writers pushed back they moved the show all around times then cancelled it. They didn't want kids to grow with the characters, they just wanted the same generic show that just keeps kids.

They should have done the story the same way bmw, from very young age to adulthood. They had the opportunity to make a show that could be more consistent with the development, and feels like a good continuation of bmw, also make a better arc for Eric, he was fun but too goofy by the last season. Also backstreet boys is forever. And dang they turned Cory into a generic stupid dcom father

Who here needs a they meets world where Topanga and Cory have twins after Riley moves out!? Honestly though, if there was another try at a reboot, they could just jump a couple of years and have Riley, Maya, and their gang solely be recurring characters and just move forward with Cory and Topangas story line. Their still young...twins wouldn't be too out there

These kinds of older sitcoms always seemed to make more relatable jokes and pop culture references, especially the 90s shows and early naughts. The newer shows, especially on Disney Channel, can't be ironic to save a life. I remember Cory once made a reference to Beevis and Butthead, the audience applause. Lizzie Maguire can reference Orlando Bloom and it works. Show me a modern Disney sitcom that can make any pop culture reference with a good punchline. You can't because it doesn't exist.

It started with a family audience the audience grew with the show. I started watching it when I was a kid because of reruns on ABC Family and yes it was still called that at the time and late night on Disney Channel then the first season came to dvd this was the time old 70s 80s 90s shows were first coming to DVD I got season one of Boy Meets World on my 8th birthday along with the first season of fresh prince of bel air and Bad Boys 2 which was new to DVD at the time. I also got the back to the future trilogy that year. Anyway🎉 I think it resented with kids of anytime even though looking back it was totally 90s and I was born in 95 so I don’t really even remember the 90s I was 4 for three months in 1999. But a lot of people found it when it came to syndication and people are still finding it to this day.

It's been like, a year since this was posted but the major thing I'm getting is that like Peanuts, the Boy Meets World fandom and the public at large mythologized Boy Meets World to the point where once it passed off to Disney Channel everyone forgot that Cory and Topanga's relationship was a teeter-totter after they grew up, Shawn and Angela broke up for *cough* "reasons." and Eric's shenanigans became the funniest part of the show by the end, so Disney amped up the sappiness to cater toward that mythology but it backfired horribly.

Those classroom scenes were so unrealistic. I mean rhe same students in all the classes or a student we see just one time & never again. Also Corey should've been promoted during the high school season. Plus the whole "shipping" thing was getting out of hand. BTW Sean & Angela forever.

I despised this show so much when i was a kid. I never watched the original so i had no attachment to the adults in the cast, so all i knew was what i was being shown in the show, and i couldn't stand a second of it. The acting was so horrible, and this is coming from a kid who mostly watched disney sitcoms. Every single scene felt so robotic and awkward with how every line was delivered, it felt like the show was written/directed by fucking aliens. Instead of having conversations flow naturally every single scene felt so stilted and broken up like "You say this now. I say this now. Here's a joke. (laugh track). Now we abruptly change subject". The protagonists were bratty annoying and unlikable and every attempt at humor just made me more irritated. There is no reason why a 14 year old girl should be watching your supposedly relatable 14 year old girl protagonists and be thinking "grow tf up you annoying ass kids". But don't even get me started on the "serious" moments where it felt like the world's most melodramatic after school special every single episode. You would have some middle school kids start waxing poetically about the meaning of growing up every time they get a C on a test. How tf do you go from acting like 5 year olds one second and then 50 year olds writing their autobiography the next, surely you could have managed something in between.

you know what i never understood? corey's role as the teacher. they tried to turn him into feeny by giving him every single role possible (from history teacher to life coach etc etc), but 1. making the parent the teacher was a mistake and 2. even during the "history" lessons, he wasn't even talking about history. he always spoke in such a weird way, like he was giving a ted talk. i only remember a few instances where he was actually discussing historical subjects. i'm not surprised that the few episodes that i remember liking were the ones wherein corey barely had a role (like the episode where riley gets bullied).

This! It never made sense. Cory never had any aspirations to be a teacher nor the skills to do so. He was a filmmaker and it would've made sense for him to be a documentarian or something. I actually think Eric or Shawn would've made more sense. Eric showed great skill in the episode where he covered Feeny's night class and Shawn becoming a teacher would've been a great nod to his relationships with both Turner and Feeny. He would've been a cool mixture of both men.

Agreed. I liked it, but it was nowhere near Boy Meets World’s league. Morals were hand fed, issues were too soft. To much Auggie. I was put off how mature Riley and Maya were. Shawn and Corey were kids for awhile and grew into teens. The lesser important characters were around too much. A lot of BMW’s greatness is it being just Shawn and Corey, or just Corey and Topanga. Riley is too perfect, Corey and Topanga are too nice of parents. Corey clashed with his parents and got in trouble, which made Allan and Amy to have to be grown ups instead of seeming more like friends. Corey as a teacher feels like a happy hippy who preaches and doesn’t actually teach school lessons. Kid Corey teaching Feeny’s class about Ann Frank not only hit harder than anything in GMW, but does a better job of teaching than his adult self who is supposed to be a teacher.
@ajl9772

100% agree with all of this! I had been hoping freeform would pick up the show from Disney Channel so they could do more mature content like its predecessor. I will add they should have merged the characters of Lucas and Farkle into one character. That character would be closer to what Farkle turned into by the final season. Farkle could be annoying, but at least he was interesting. Lucas was boring and it really seemed they didn't know what to do with his character other than make him the love interest. He got better as it went along like Farkle, but he wasn't someone you got invested in like Topanga. If they gave him some of Farkle's quirks and personality (not all lol) I think they could have had an interesting character and love interest. What made this show pale in comparison to the original to me was the relationships between the characters. Instead of having a Morgan sibling in Augy, they needed to have an Eric sibling. To me, Eric and Corey's relationship was one of the best of the series. It really did a good job exploring the sibling relationship. There is no sibling relationship explored with Riley and Augy because he is so much younger. They barely interact and when they do it's always positive and no real conflict occurs. Most kids have siblings within 4 years of them. They bicker and fight. Also having Augy be so young didn't allow him to have any real stories. Eric was often used to be the main character when Ben Savage wasn't available to shoot many scenes in a week. As a result, Eric becomes just as important character as Corey. Missing that type of character I feel left a lot of potential. You can feel the void. The B stories in this are VERY weak. I think it was a mistake to make Riley the main character. In my opinion Maya was more interesting and was the one learning or "meeting" the world. She was more relatable than Riley who was written as too perfect. She was very smart and very nice. Not nearly as flawed as Corey was as a character. That's what made him a good protagonist. He was flawed and therefore he had more to learn and interesting stories could happen. The Corey/Feeney relationship couldn't happen with him and Riley because he was her dad. It would have been better to see Corey take an interest in mentoring someone who wasn't his daughter. Instead, Corey is teaching the whole class the lesson, but the lesson is mostly for his daughter and friends. In Boy Meets World, often Feeney was teaching normal school work and then Corey would say or do something that resulted in him talking to Corey after class that would lead to the actual lesson. In this show Corey seems to be teaching things that definitely aren't in any curriculum lol.

My opinion is probably really biased since I'm a neurodivergent who found a lot of comfort in GMW but there is once criticism I hear floated that I definitely agree with: Girl Meets World seemed to constantly stray between being a Boy Meets World 'sequel'/years later/etc and its own separate show. There'd be some episodes that were pretty much entirely about an original character or characters but then there'd be some episodes where it'd just be Cory & Topanga, but then pretty much every episode had Riley, Maya, Lucas & Farkle but then you had Smackle and Zay getting introduced later down the line and quite a few side characters in different episodes (in the school), so that was the main portion of the show. Ultimately, I think it tried too hard to be both a sequel and a new show, and the Boy Meets World aspect got left behind, which alienates most of the audience who are watching the show with nostalgia hopes
