Hey, this is a wonderful performance! I'm working on this piece myself right now. I really appreciate the lyrical approach you've taken, rather than plowing through it as an exercise in speed (as some would do). Nuanced and dynamic - I'm sure Bach would love it!

See lenabloch’s note above. He’s just playing the flute music as is, without transposing first. Bb on a C instrument, when played on the alto sax, an Eb horn, comes out as concert C#...

Aside from the fact he's playing a sax, his phrasing and approach is similar to many modern baroque flautists I've heard play this piece. What exactly isn't baroque about his interpretation?

Nicholas Scott the gradual dynamics...?
@nicholasscott9672
5 жыл бұрын
@@mqple5686 it's very common to have gradual dynamics in historically informed baroque performances. The idea that performers didn't play gradual dynamics before composers started explicitly writing them in is kinda silly. Bach leaves extremely few performance markings so articulation and expressive approach varies greatly. Listen to a few baroque flautists tackle this piece. it's not meant to be played like a robot
@mqple5686
5 жыл бұрын
Nicholas Scott lmaoo i meant most baroque music was meant to play with terraced dynamics because of the harpsichord, not because composers didn't write them in. op wasn't talking about how modern flautists play this piece, they were just saying it wasn't how the piece was originally performed.
@nicholasscott9672
5 жыл бұрын
@@mqple5686 Yep and that notion that most baroque music was meant to be played with terraced dynamics is an extremely debatable one. No-one really knows how these things were performed in the baroque era for obvious reasons but... the people who have spent the most time researching and attempting to recreate baroque performance practices are modern baroque-style performers. That is why I brought them up.
