Thank you so much for taking the time to create and share this amazing mapmaking tutorial! I tried to follow along, but I found it a bit challenging due to the sped-up pace and frequent cuts. If possible, would you consider making a version of the tutorial at normal speed and with fewer cuts? I think it would help a lot of us who are trying to learn step-by-step. Thanks again for everything-I really appreciate it!

Having issues with applying a gradient to my map, I'm using Gimp and I don't understand how you got your gradient to apply differently to shades of white and black. My gradients appear just standard so they apply an irrelevant range of colors across the entire landmass. I'm sorry if I documented this poorly I'm not very experienced with photo editing thanks in advance for any help.

In GIMP you need to create a custom gradient and save it. You can then apply that gradient when using the gradient map effect!

So I have a fantasy map for some novels I am working on and am currently in the process of trying to replicate this. Right now I am using Gimp, but I guess gimp cannot use .abr brushes? (like in the first video you of this series you posted). You should try to make a live video, or a real-time start to finish on a smaller-scale project. I really like your content.

Hello. First of all, huge thank you for the video, amazing and very straightforward tutoria ! It seems that I have some kind of problem with either Wilbur or my method of exporting / saving my heightmap, because everytime I upload my heightmap to Wilbur and press Fill Basins - for some unknown reason program fills all selected landmass below certain point with elevated land and it covers most of my lowland hills and small mountains, and I end up having a straight plain with only high peaks being above this certain level. Do you know how it can be fixed?
@shortvalleyhiker

Wilbur will fill everything thats surrounded, say you have a crater - it will be flattened if theres no hole in the ring. If that opening is higher than the craters bottom the crater will be filled to the point of the opening in the surrounding wall. I usually go back in and manually paint a river basin.

@@shortvalleyhiker hmhm. Thank you for your answer, also googled it yesterday (about placing a hole in surface to not fiil space). But in the end I think that it is okay for me to run all erosion cycles without filling the basins, because result is still pretty good with no weird stuff, so maybe I just won't fill them.

Photoshop isn't my specialty so i got loss around the 2 minute mark. How did you get the linear burn to remove the white overlay? Or am I hearing that wrong? I am trying to follow your steps but that last minute is not helping.
@shortvalleyhiker
10 ай бұрын
What i did was to add a white solid over the embossed layer to replace all the gray with perfect white. That way the Linear burn doesnt effect the colours on the heightmap. Hope this helps! :)

Hi, I'm so stuck with this (I don't know anything about Photoshop). I succeeded at importing my own landmass (not easily mind you) and I just now can't seem to make it so I can paint with the brushes on it. When I try, it says "The fill for this layer must be rasterized before proceeding. It will no longer be editable as a fill. Rasterize the fill?" which seems to remove the hue adjustments and brushes become inoperable. I've been at this for 2 hours and I'm just so bad I can't make it work. Could you help me ?
@shortvalleyhiker

Quick fix! Select the masks and paint on those instead, the mask is the icon to the right of the solid, for each layer. Hope it helps!

I devoloped a similar process where you use real data from Nasa, "cut together" and blend then using content aware fill and then process in Wilber, even the white box is similar. The problem was that you let "real world parts" bleed into the final result.... First, i tried something really similar, where i painted the shapes myself, but never get good results.... But this method of yours is really good, gonna try to remake my entire map using it. The old one you can see the himalayas.
