My heart says it is a nice sound but my brain says it is firing three times followed by a misfire, therefore he has maladjusted the carby and is abusing the engine. Set KZitem playback speed if you think it is normal V-twin sound (fire, 305 degrees, fire, 405 degrees, fire....) this one is firing three times then missing, three times then missing.

That’s a great learning opportunity! You’re kinda right about the "misfires" - it’s a Harley-specific characteristic of their classic motors. In these engines, both cylinder shafts of the V-Twin are mounted on a single crank pin, and the spark interval is synchronous, meaning both cylinders are sparked at the same time. While going through the strokes one piston will be not at full stroke, leading to the distinctive "bang bang pop" sound or "po-ta-to" (with that "to" falling sound indicating ignition under low compression/half stroke). In short, Harley engines are designed to sound like this. This is also not really perfectly correct, engines and strokes are somewhat complicated and I'm just riffing what I know, so grains of salt and yadada, so while this is kinda in the right lane, I'm open to corrections :)

@@adestimare5985 : I don't think you have it right. Some old Harley engines have distributor ignition and can' be made to do this po-ta-to rhythm, though it doesn't sound exactly the same for a few reasons, eg lower cyl capacity. Late model Harleys with fuel injection cannot be made to do it, indicating the carby plays a role. Other V-twin engines with a carby for each cylinder can't be easily made to do it. Side-by-side twins that fire alternately (ie every 360 degrees), such as the 1960's BSA with s single carby, will make the same rhythm if the choke is partly on or the carby maladjusted, though they don't sound like a Harley as they are much smaller and idle at higher revs. Twin carb versions will not. In a single-cylinder engine with lost spark ignition (due to the points driven of the crank and not the camshaft), the plug is fired near the end of the compression stroke, which is just what is needed, and this means the plug is also fired at the end of the exhaust stroke, which does nothing. In an inline twin, you can have a lost spark system but single points must be driven from the camshaft. The points must feed two coils. With alternate combustion, one cylinder gets spark at the end of the compression stroke, which means the other cylinder gets spark at the end of the exhaust stroke, the same as for a single cyl engine as described above. However, a Harley has its cylinders in a 45 degree V so as to fit two large cylinders in a motorcycle. With single points driven off the crank feeding two coils or a duel coil per Harley practice, this means when the front cylinder is fired at the end of its compression stroke, the rear cylinder is only about 1/3rd into its exhaust stroke - still does nothing. When the rear cylinder is fired at the end of its compression, the front cyl being 45 degrees ahead is sparked at the beginning of its intake stroke. This still normally does nothing, as the density of fuel=air is too low to fire. Thus, a Harley engine can be made to fire three times in succession, then miss, three times in succession then miss. If you run KZitem videos at half speed, you can clearly hear this bak-bak-bak miss bak-bak-bak miss rhythm. Significant difference in the sound of each "to" in po-ta-to is imagination, as it is a bit fast for human hearing to process. In all V-twins, assymetric firing (eg Harleys fire with a 305 dgree gap alternating with 405 degree gap, sounding "ba-bak-ba-bak" but most human ears have trouble recognising it at speeds above idle. So why does a Harley miss every third firing? Its because the three successively firings speeds crank rotation up, changing the vacuum on the carby, changing mixture strength. The misfire causes a drop in crank speed, changing mixture strength back. It is the same phenomena where a single cyl engine can be made to "8-stoke" ie miss every second power stroke, by maladjusting the carby or applying choke. Harley-Davidson did NOT design their engine to make the po-ta-to rhythm - it is something that owners discovered. No engineer would intentionally design an engine to misfire - it is bad for engines. However, recognising that the sound helps sell Harleys, the factory tried to patent how the sound is produced. The patent failed of course, as 45 degree twins with single carbies have long been established practice, and anyone can maladjust a carby. The occurrence of spark timing at the beginning of the intake stroke on one cylinder does not normally fire the mixture because the mixture density is normally too weak, as I said. Note that the voltage required to produce a spark is proportional to the plug gap, and inversely proportional to gas pressure. Some cross coupling in the coil may allow the firing of the intended cylinder to hold down the voltage for the other cylinder. So the voltage produced by the coil is insufficient to break the mixture in the lagging cylinder down and make a spark. However, this form of lost spark ignition is why Harleys tend to cough back through the carby when an incorrect kick starting technique is used - throttle opened during kicking, enricher on, possibly too small a plug gap. In such cases if the intended cylinder does not fire then the lagging cylinder, on its intake stroke may have enough gas density to fire instead.

@@keithammleter3824Interesting reasoning, thank you. So from a practical point of view, does this sound, which I perceive as music, does it kill the engine or does it only do minor harm to it? What does the wear in the engine increase when we hear it?
@keithammleter3824
Ай бұрын
@@DEPOSITHUNTER It will not make the engine suddenly die - there will be no sudden catastrophic failure. It will just cause excessive wear - minor harm if you want to call it that. By how much does the wear increase? That's not easy to say. If the bike is allowed to idle like that in frequent traffic light stops of traffic jams, the wear is going to be greater than if the bike is hardly ever idled and spends most of its time cruising at highway speeds.

@@keithammleter3824 Thank you for your detailed explanations. I read about one guy who owned one motorcycle for 19 years and he was set up for such work at idle speed, he said that in his case it did not affect the engine in any way and he sold it. Also, if I understood correctly, this sound is typical only for a cold engine, when it warms up, that is, when you are already standing at idle at traffic lights, the engine runs more smoothly. Interesting, of course, very attractive sound, it is thanks to it that I hunt for Fat Boy on Evo and carburetor.. for me it is the perfect combination of all possible characteristics and appearance )))
