I love his sense of time on ballads. His melodies have a way of snaking around and through the changes and yet it's alway somehow right.

My father in law was in Egypt and he speaks Arabic and spoke to the Egyptian prisoners and he asked why they retreated when they outnumbered Israel so greatly. The prisoners called them liars and said that they had seen great multitudes of Israeli soldiers.

To me Dexter is amazing here. Like Lester he has his own time. Constantly creative. Deeply soulful. You can tell he loves the melody. Belgium 1964 Dexter Gordon: tenor saxophone George Gruntz: piano Guy Pedersen: bass Daniel Humair: drums

His actual speaking voice was magical, beautiful warm tone, just like his tenor. I love the film he made Round Midnight, listening to him in that movie is a meditation

i hope that people realise how truly great this footage is....this is where the ocean meets the land,....the very moment when the sun goes down and creates that sort of magical colours in the sky... i know it might sound too poetical, but man...Dexter Gordon, playing "Body and Soul " live, and me being so damm lucky to be sitting here watching it and listening is just too much.... viva el jazz, viva Dexter and his band FOREVER!!

Don't forget, guys this is fairly "early" Dexter. Much more Lester Young in his playing. Later of he plays this tune completely differently, obviously influenced by the Coltrane recording. He even uses the Trane changes, tritone substitutions and stuff. But no one plays a ballad like Dexter. He doesn't have to play fast to carry a melody, even though he is a bebopper.

@@kpoudavoff yeah, its earlier than the 70s. But this wasn't his early years. By this time he was playing differently than his actual early years. When he was with fats navarro in the 40s was when that Lester, Coleman and Bird influence really stood out. His beat bounced more at that time (not discrediting his beat at this time, this is great too but its way more behind). As well as the difference in language.

I think you meant to say “under appreciated “ (He was a national treasure.) but anyone with even a cursory knowledge of jazz saxAHPhonists (that is how Dex pronounced it, I heard him say it) would agree with both of us…GIANT!
