My goodness Armley was run down back then. I am not suprised my parents were so desperate to get away to North Leeds in the 50's.

Shops, shops everywhere! How useful. How practical. Now, get in a car, suffer about five sets of traffic lights to a huge supermarket car park - American style! The image at 10'19 of the tower block construction resembles some great spider and it's web that has destroyed all the streets around it.

Lived at 259 Tong Rd from 1962-64 then No 2 4th Avenue from 1964- 65 (My older sister died in this house, I was 4 yrs old ) Then lived at no 4 Butts Mount from 1966 to 1977 ( ages 6 to 17yrs) We were all poor, some more than others but we had a great community, most of my family lived around me, aunts/uncles/Grand Parents, it was a hard time but a good time. so many friends, I often wonder where they are now. I went to Green Lane from 64 - 71 , Armley Park from 71 - 73 then Gotts Park 73 - 76 . . . . I am 62 now and still think of the many things we used to get up to lol

This is fascinating. I've only read the fictional account of Armley, and Leeds, in Barbara Taylor Bradford's "A Woman of Substance". It was so wonderfully descriptive, and I've wondered how accurate it is in the context of the times. Was there really a "carriage trade" at the turn of the century?

I went to christ the king school from 1955 to 1960. travelled every school day from Rodley bottoms to the school. Remember Bramley Baths, The Barley Mow and Bramley RLFC, The outgang and the Police Station. It is such a pity that these buildings no longer exist, When I first got married lived in Farsley, sadly my wife never settled, but for me Farsley and Bramley where home and I felt so happy living there.

Hi, thanks for putting these awesome vids together, some of the pictures really bring back long forgotten memories. It's a long shot I know but can I ask you if you remember a Pharmacy/Chemist corner shop on possibly either Meadow Road or Easterly Crescent in Armley around 1969? it would have been all closed up at that time cos my Grandad had retired. The house/shop was purchased by Compulsory Purchase Order around 1972 when they built the M621. Regards, Andy

+Andy Bonnell Photography and Modelbuilding Hi Andy thank you for your comments. With regards to your query I am unable to help you unfortunately. The area you speak about is not actually Armley but is however Holbeck.Have you had a look on this website www.leodis.net/display.aspx?resourceIdentifier=2002315_79592532.You will find lots of photos of areas around Holbeck.Good luck with your search. It may be that you have the address wrong as I do not recall Easterly Crescent in this area.Regards Martin

Thanks for replying Martin, it's a long long time ago so my memory is a bit fuzzy as I was only about 5 yrs at the time, I got the street names off my Grandparents WW2 National Identity Cards which were left to me. they've got Armley on them for some reason. I'll research Holbeck now and I'll have a look at that site you recommended, cheers mate :-)
