Mary is meant to be a boy. That's one of the Easter eggs of Chicago. Everyone loves Mary for that reason, but to give the role of Mary to a female is straight out suicide.

My former college did a production of _Chicago_ once, and there was nobody male who could pull off the role of Mary Sunshine... at least not out of anyone who auditioned, so it was passed down to a female; however, the drag element remained.

ps...I am sure you have the brass cojones needed to do the 'grand' gestures if you just remember that it's not you on stage, but the character and you must be that character and act as he or she would, in this case, a young boy. A young, 'Jack and the Beanstalk' and Jack would be stunned finding a 'lady giant sweeping the floor.' So, get those cojones in character and you be swept away by your character...I feel.

I think you're absolutely right. People have to remember that on stage, we're not on TV or film and movements have to be broader...eye's need to be bigger....gesticulations must be more grand...as everyone must see them, from the 'god's'....as well as orchestra. What might be overacting on TV/Film. is perfectly acceptable, indeed, needed, on stage. Kudos on your remark and our agreeing on it. Pax et Hospitium.

I didn't think you overacted. I think your face shown how a kid (after all, it's 'Jack & the Beanstalk) would feel if a door did open and there was a 'lady giant sweeping the floor'..and your hands. Good gesticulation, noting that on stage, movements must be so broad. Great voice. ONLY criticism I'd have, if that's what you're looking for, is your breath in 2 sections was cut off and you had to take breaths where they weren't meant to be. Only 2x, though. TWO ONLY! Otherwise, bravo! Gr8 job.

...and then when Movie Land killed Chicago...in the movie....they changed it from being a man to just looking like one...*cough, Christine Baranski, cough* well....."dream it in your living room, be it in the theater"....The feature film version was an all out genocide of many of the things that are very important about the musical....I've said enough...the character of Mary Sunshine is tremendous in the theater.....unbelievable talent.... :)
