The class instructor is an ill prepared and clueless idiot. Totally lacking in safety measures for his students. He should have 'many' CO2 fire extinguishers in the shop, and the students should be trained with proper procedures, to respond to any possible run-away situation. This event could have been fatal to those students if the engine over revved, and blew up. Everybody's grinning, but do they know how lucky they are? Or how dangerous this situation really is?

@@REDNECKHOOSIER1 these are kids in a diesel mechanic class, they don't know anything yet, so yes at least they tried, and possibly the injector pump was 12v and the kid thought if he killed the power the pump would shut down. And like I said before when your there, things are happening quite fast, people can't always think as fast as needed. I had an 8.3 run away with a stuck rack, I was all alone and had a board to flop over the intake but it wouldn't shut off, you run and get a 3/4 inch wrench and start opening the lines on the injectors to kill the pressure, but I've been a diesel mechanic for 35+ years. Not a kid in diesel class that never seen it happen. And runaways are not necessarily running off engine oil, Detroit's can.

Thanks Google, I can't reply to comments. Fuckers. Okay, do you know anything about diesel engines? When a diesel engine runs away, you cannot simply cut off the fuel supply. Search for 'runaway diesel.' Fucking moron.
@Pitchplus8
10 жыл бұрын
there are two kind os runaway diesel. 1. is the diesel runs on own oil, it happens when the turbocharger failes. 2. the fuilpump gasoline regulation has a failure. In case of 1. you can runaway too for your own protection or you try cut the airflow by blocking the inlet manifold. In case of 2. you can disconect the fuel line who goes into the fuel pump and wait for running out of diesel. You can also blockade the air intake manifold.
@zippysmitty

Pitchplus Acht I've personally never seen any device that regulates gasoline on a diesel engine. it must be located by the spark plugs somewhere. lol

Pitchplus Acht lol. I am glad you seen the humor in that and didn't just reply with anger. some of the early diesel engines actually did have sparkplugs. most people are think that the diesel engine never has spark plugs. now you have a way to win yourself endless beer bets. ;)

***** Indeed. International Farmall, model MD's, for just one to mention, were perfect examples. Plus, a LOT of tractors of all-brands would start with gasoline, and then switch to kerosene---but still needed the spark plugs to FIRE the lower-octane kero, if I'm not mistaken? About the only-option I'd ever seen for a runaway, with enough air-leaks that it couldn't be smothered, is to unload a dry-chem fire extinguisher "down the chute". If that don't work, then either RUN yourself, or shove it out the doorway with a forklift---and DON'T look-back...!☺

@laytonmclean9814
10 жыл бұрын
Yeah mate, do some research... !!! Let me just inform you a little if you cant be bothered. A diesel motor runs from combustion of diesel fuel which is ignited under extreme pressure. In other words fuel is injected into the bore above the piston and the piston comes up the bore creating extreme pressure which therefore ignites the diesel and this process repeats as the pistons are connected to the crank shaft at different heights to make it as simple as possible so therefore one combustion in one cylinder (bore) powers the next and so on. A diesel therefore doesn't need spark plugs so you can't kill it by shorting out the battery or power supply to the spark plugs (turning off the key). It also means that as long as there is a fuel source to ignite in the cylinder, the engine will keep running (such as diesel or oil) . However when a diesel engine 'runs away' it has started to consume its own engine oil as the piston rings have failed, which normally keep the oil out of the combustion chamber (cylinder). When this happens you can shut off the diesel to the motor but it won't do anything, it will only stop the consumption of diesel but not oil. The only way now to shut off the engine is to stop air from reaching the cylinder. As you probably know that for a fire or combustion to occur, you need a heat source which in this case is the extreme pressure, you need a fuel source which is diesel and in the case of a runaway engine diesel, and air. So therefore in this case we cant possibly stop the fuel source which is oil from getting into the cylinder as the piston rings are shot, and we cant stop the heat source which in this case is created via extreme compressing of the fuel source, so the only thing left is to shut off the air source. I hope this explained why you cant shut off the fuel supply and expect it to die. :)

Used to happen to GM diesel car engines. Used rags to block intake and then use halon fire extinguishers to "lock up" the oxygen and stop the engine. Had to have 2 or 3 extinguishers ready so the engine stopped and didn't just slow down.

@@daveantd1971 And that usually happens when the top cover is not installed properly. The other usual cause is a stuck injector rack.
