I have spent many years reading histories of the Hellenic and Byzantine periods. This 9.39 minute video does a wonderful job in distilling the history of Southern Italy that has been totally obscured in Italians today. Thank you Century 21 for another masterful piece.

Two years ago I traveled to Sicily and found so many of the people just like Sicilian Americans focus on relatively short periods of rule by the Normans, Arabs, etc and ignore not only the Hellenic origins but also the long "Byzantine" period. I talked to one Siciliana who said they still scare children who misbehave that "the Greek Levantine monster is going to get them" I concluded that this was more about the religious divide between Rome and Constantinople, and of course we know Rome prevailed. I loved Sicily and intend to go back.

Helga Haper & Mike Chioros, thank you for appreciating this video. Different peoples "ruled" southern Italy like the Romans, Arabs and Normans. Various peoples also ruled Greece such as the Turks. But "ruling" a land is not the same as "colonising" it. We paid tax to our foreign rulers and even adopted aspects of their culture but our blood and our consciousness always remained "Greek". The way history is written has confused people. The fact that should be understood is that the people of Greece and Southern Italy have one clear common ancestor above all others: The Ancient Greeks.

Based partially on this video I recently spent 2 weeks in Sicily, Calabria, Puglia, and Campania. I reccommend that anyone that wants to see the finest examples of Hellenistic architecture follow in the paths of this video. Also the finest examples of Byzantine mosaics from the 1100s prior to the sack of Constaninople are in Sicily. What is funny even though between the Greeks and Byzantines there is over 1,000 years of active history the Sicilians focus more on the couple hundred years of Norman and Arab occupation which left so much less of a legacy than the Greeks and Greek speaking Romans know as the Byzantines. Thank you agora productions for the production of this video that I send to all my Greek American friends.

I just returned from 2 weeks in Calabria, Puglia, Catania and Sicily. An amazing experience exploring the Greek roots of the area. The best preserved Greek Cities, and in Sicily the finest example of Byzantine mosaics at the peak of thier art in the 1100's. The scenery and the people were more than I ever hoped for. This video brings it all to life. I was unable to connect with any Griko speakers and had to make do with basic Italian and English. Saw many faces that looked liked my Greek relatives. DNA matches could be made in short order.

I despise what Turkey is. That whole area should be given back to the Greeks, the Church of the Hagia Sophia given back to the Greek Orthodox Church, and the schools given to the Greeks. That way in about 2-3 generations through re-education the entire population of Asia minor will be Greek and Orthodox Christian once again. Re-educate the Islamic Turkishness out of every Asia Minor child.

@sopotinos oh no, the true greeks are still the ones who live in nowadays greece! they may have been under turkish rule, but they (together with the other balkan people) maintained their traditions and culture, they fought for their freedom and never surrendered or converted. to me they are the proudest and bravest people of all times, we owe so much to them!

@xxnecspenecmetuxx They're legally named Autonomous Communities (So they have some powers to self-rule.) by the Spanish Constitution, some are just regions others are considered nations. Evidently, spanish nationalists wants them to remain as regions, but catalan, vasque, galician (and some others) nationalists wants independence from Spain. The reason why Portugal is sovereign and Catalonia not is historical, and maybe luck. Thanks, you're nice ^-^

@aclaparat777 oh sorry, I have to admit I'm quite ignorant about your people, I only know that in spain there are different official languages as well as different nations, but I never really understood if they are only "regions" or autonomous states, so I always called spanish everyone who came from Spain. indeed, I consider myself bergamasca rather than actually italian. well, then thank you my catalan friend for correcting me :)
