im learning all this stuff to become certified on these consoles for work so I can teach students through my state how to use their school light boards. In my sr year of high school I made a light show to the skrillex remix of avicii's Levels, and I gave up with the ETC Element and just used the ShowXpress by Chauvet due to them having a timeline similar to use like a video editor. As I am learning this software in depth through ETC's Learning Stage, and having just completed the Effects segment, I AM SO IMPRESSED WITH YOUR PATIENCE WITH THIS HAVING ONLY USED SIMPLE EFFECTS WITH HANG/FOLLOW TIMES AND CUES!!! WOW!! with ShowXpress it took me 3.5 months to program a 4 minute song. I didn't even have moving lights. we moved the buttons by hand with the locking rail and had one single hazer and 2 dry ice fog machines. How long did this take to program? I see that it is an older video with the top comment from the poster being posted 7 years ago. but im curious. I want to spread the joy and pure awesomeness that is technical theatre.

How exactly was this done with the ion? did you play it through a cuelist or use effects on submasters? or what else? this just seems so hard to do on a theatre console...
@fizzpopify

I guess on the cuelist because a chase on a ion is to hard to program so it would be more of a pain in the backside if they did it with the sub masters

WHAT IS THE NAME OF THE SONG!!! I know it is Kashmir, but from what band? This is defiantly not the original version by Led Zeppelin.

Well done! Definitely look into using midi show control timecode or SMPTE timecoding for your next show. It'll definitely make your life easier!

I do lights at my church and we use the ION console and it is the easiest console to work with in my opinion which is good because I am not the fastest learner so having to work with that console is awesome

I agree. The ion is a great console. Very easy to program. The only other console I would use would be the MA2 OnPc

There were many step based effects used, but that was not the primary way that the show ran. It was run using normal cues with different effects inside those cues. The cues were fired using follow/hang. It is very cumbersome to program a show like this, using the follow/hang function, and I recommend using a more time efficient way of programing.

On an Ion?!?! We have one at my church but I don't know how to get this in depth with everything. Was this a step based effect?

You could also use the Show Control function, and using the internal timecode, learn the show to the music. You can then go back and edit times as needed.

How was this programmed? Did you time each different cue with a point in the song? Also was it all an effect cue or many that just followed each other?

Sick light show!!how long did it took you to make every cue and to sinc it to the music?
@ajd394

@zachtheLD i did a light show using a laptop running QLab. The laptop played the audio and send MIDI time code to ION. Then ion and events (look them up in the manual) that fired each cue. this means that you have to make an event for every cue. the other way to do it is to use MSC (midi show control) cues to directly fire the cues from the Qlab on the laptop at specific times.

@zachtheLD No man sorry. I have never used midi, I had a friend that used it with Congo Jr. for a show, but I have never had to use it. I don't know too much about it.

@Christgoldberg That’s what I would have liked to use, but it wasn’t available to me at the time. The facility where this show was programmed didn’t have all of the hardware needed. I did try to use MIDI once, but I found it “vague” when trying to sync it with the ION and could not find a lot of information on it from the product manufacturers or ETC. Know where I can find any resources?
@Christgoldberg

Did you try using midi to sync the music with the lights instead of trying to time everything out?
@zachtheLD
13 жыл бұрын
@bsplightmaster It took about 2 weeks to program, but it could be done much faster. All of the cues in the show were fired using follow/hang times, which are extremely time consuming to create. I think I spent just as much time getting the timing fine tuned as I did doing actual designing and cue writing.

Just wondering... how long did it take to program this? I've tried to program stuff like this on an ETC Element and it would literally take me weeks to get something like this. Very well done!
