Thanks for the clear & balanced discussion on Glutegard. I totally agree with your assessment & from my reading, your stance appears to be supported by scientists & other Coeliac Disease specialists & researchers both in Australia & overseas. Your advice is also echoed by Coeliac Associations. Thanks again. 👏

Gluten damages the small intestine villi. Triggers malabsorption and microbiome imbalances, leaky gut. Does not necessarily cause symptoms that one feels….very « silent », but damaging, nevertheless.

I have small bowel biopsy diagnosed celiac/sprue. I really don't appreciate people who muddy the waters by being gluten free when it actually doesn't harm them in any way. I resent them and anyone who calls themselves celiac without having a proper diagnosis 😐

Is it possible for them to have a negative blood test but have Celiac? My son was just diagnosed (he's younger) and she had a negative blood test but she has enlarged tonsils and adenoids, sensitive skin, chronic upper respiratory congestion, intermittent but fairly regular loose stools AND constipation, her adult teeth have patchy enamel issues and shes had to get her adult molars sealed because of it. She complains fairly regularly if getting tired more quickly when she's running and playing. She's definitely on the higher end of the weight curve and her growth hasn't suffered as far as I can tell. I just don't want to push for an endoscopy or something if she's got a negative blood test.

Yes, it is definitely possible. It may be worth pushing for a referral to a paediatric gastroenterologist who may decide to do a gastroscopy to check, given her symptoms and first-degree relative has just been diagnosed. Keep her eating gluten in the meantime. I hope you find an answer!

If I had a Celiac BINGO card, I think my 2.5yo son would've won the main "prize" 😣: 1. He was born at 95th centile in height, he's around 5th now 2. He does not eat at all as he doesn't have an appetite 3. He has 6 teeth with cavities even though we've always brushed them regularly and he was not eating sweets 4. He is indeed VERY irritable, observed by my wife and now by his grandma and aunt (I always thought he was a "just a toddler") 5. He had low iron level and was prescribed iron supplement 6. He sometimes says his tummy hurts 7. He'll eat for 3 minutes and almost always he'd burp 8. His No2s are often challanging (constipation) We did a blood test for celiac a year ago and it came negative so I assumed that was that and hoped his appetite would come one day. Then my wife read that they're are actually many false negatives among children. We are doing a more comprehensive testing in 2 weeks and either way we'll go gluten free as we ran out of possible reasons for all his health problems. Here in the UK, none of the doctors even mentioned he could have Celiac. Dietitians would recommend feeding avocados and croissants... Ridiculous! Paediatricians would say "let's wait another 3 months and see"... My advice to all parents, if you think that something is wrong with your child (which we did for the past 2 years), is to press doctors to do more testing but also ask about false negatives!

So, bottom-line, your opinion is based mostly on the assumption that your patients are not smart enough to understand that GluteGuard is not intended to allow a free-for-all consumption of gluten-containing foods. That Glutagen doesn't claim this in any of it's marketing material, that it is to be used for accidental consumption of gluten because it can completely break down gluten proteins into non-immune response producing components. Sounds pretty irresponsible to me, glad you're not my dietitian. Expensive? You believe that $1 compared to the cost of a meal these days isn't worth the protection of accidental consumption? You seriously need to re-evalutate your opinion of both GluteGuard and the intelligence of your patients.

You probably already know, but depending on what part of the world you are at, there are some places that offer testing for food intolerances such as fructan intolerance. It is not a blood test but a breath test where you drink a rather icky tasting liquid, then your breath is tested several times over a few hours to see how your digestive system is handling it. While fructans cover a lot of things other than wheat, a lot of people who think they are gluten sensitive are actually lacking in the enzymes to properly digest fructans, so when they go gluten free, they get a lot better. Because there are a Lot of fructans in wheat.

What 'airborne' gluten are you worried about exactly? Unless you're working in a busy bakery with flour being thrown around constantly, gluten would not be airborne, let alone make it's way into your mouth.

No, there is not a minimum age to get screened for coeliac disease. If the screening test were to come back negative, but there were compelling signs of coeliac disease, a prudent paediatric gastroenterologist would proceed to a gastroscopy to confirm a diagnosis. 🙂

Thank you for the review. It is about patient education. I believe the study has its challenges due to: - it's hard to find a CD to ingest gluten for 42 days - the 94%+ that did take the product and completed the 42 days did not show an increase in inflammation - some reduced - while it was not a large audience, it was statistically significant I believe the product works for 3 hours, not just 1 hour. It either works of it does not. Not recommending based on a consumers' bad intentions seems strange (educate about the product and risks, period). You seem to be more worried about becoming hyper sensitive vs possible damage occurring. If you are getting CC, who knows to what level. Protected vs not protected... When you say you are not going to recommend? Will you be educating the patient regardless? As for the $1/meal being too much, I don't feel it is. Imagine giving the waiter an extra $1 to help ensure no CC. Point being, the consumer should weigh out the cost, not the physician (educate). Again, than you for presenting this. You are spot on with dealing with anxiety and traveling.

My concerns are primarily around a pharmaceutical company using their marketing to playing to the (likely unfounded) fears of people with a chronic disease in order to sell their product. If they wanted to created a product to protect against cross-contamination then they should have conducted a study that investigated much smaller quantities of gluten.
@Strib420

@@coeliac.disease.dietitian I find it strange that many (not saying you) are all about Rx drugs in the pipeline (US) where certain organization are encouraging, and they do the same exact thing. The same folks turn around and bash this supplement. Doesn't make sense. The fears are real though. I sat down and spoke with over 600 suffering from gluten related issues that ranged from Hashimoto, DH, NCGS, to over 60% celiac. I also surveyed over 5k. Only one person felt they had something that would protect them from CC. So, you have a fear factor already in play with high anxiety (a vast majority). The only ones that did not experience this were the OG ladies that cook ONLY at home with unprocessed food. They also lived like hermits. As I stated before, I believe in educating. You cannot protect the World or people from themselves. I feel you should educate (don't misuse AND conduct testing periodically), and from what I've seen and read, they do this. The makers are extremely cautious toward the fact this is NOT for a celiac to go consume gluten. In the study, they wanted to make sure it worked. The pill showed it worked against 1g of gluten in the lab, so why not demonstrate how effective it is. Is that not the point with the study, along with safety? I feel if they would have done very small trace amounts, we'd be having a conversation, "how do we know it really works with a slightly larger amount where I took two bites of a sandwich?". I believe it is wrong to leave this in a box due to unfounded fears it might be misused, so we let those other suffer on the pretense. From what I have experienced, majority of celiacs use this as a safety blanket. There reaction is emotional to say the least. I am glad you do at least see some cases where it is ideal (travel, holidays, weddings, birthdays, new eateries). I spoke with some that felt they have a new lease on life. A concern I would have are those who did not get properly tested and chose to not perform the 'gluten challenge'. I feel they live in limbo as they could be celiac. Speaking of education, we need it from top to bottom. A majority of the world does not even know what gluten is or does. What is your take on if the gluten is properly broken down, will it trigger an immune response, thus causing damage? Again, thank you for the healthy conversation.
Sorry about that - I've just updated it and it should work now :-)
