Any suggestions on Manga and how you might use Anki to create decks for a manga to help you learn those words that you may not have seen yet in the 2k6k deck?

Yeah, you could take every word you encounter in a specific manga and create a sentence card for it in Anki. I would keep it super simple: Front side: word in Kanji/Hiragana/Katakana (whatever is the most common way to read it) and the sentence you read it in as a hint field. Alternatively, just the full sentence with the word in bold would be fine as well. Back side either a translation, or if you want to be hardcore just a description of the word in Japanese. I wouldn't pack the cards with too much fluff, simply because it takes longer to create the cards. At the end of the day you need to know what you want to add if it really helps you (images, sound, etc.) Bonus: If you want sound for words you can check out "forvo[dot]com". There are recordings from native speakers for most words. You can download them for free and add them to your Anki cards if you want Hope that helps 🙂 Thanks for watching!

Around 2000 cards should be fine to have a good foundation for immersion, so you are all good! No need to go through all of the 6000 cards I would recommend to immerse from the get go, even if it's just 5-15 minutes a day. A great place to start is "NHK News Web Easy". Thanks for watching!

Glad you liked it! I think with the new FSRS algorithm there is a bit more control in terms of how big your work load gets. Best way to learn is still immersion, so no biggie if you end up hating it again, haha. Thanks for watching!

@@johnbraat I will definitely give it a shot, this tutorial has made it seem significantly more appealing 👏 PS. How is your Japanese going nowadays, if you don't mind me asking? How would you rate your speaking and reading/listening comprehension?
@johnbraat
6 ай бұрын
@@japanese2811 Of course I don't mind asking 🙂 It's going really well. I just cracked the 2000 hours studied mark last month. Comprehension wise I'm fairly confident it's around the N2 level. I currently watch Jojos and understand most words. I definitely still encounter words I don't know though. Reading is also fairly good, probably because 1300 of the 2000 hours was just Kanji/Vocab study. Speaking is getting better and better. I can definitely hold a conversation, but I'm still fishing for words here and there. I have consistently been doing one hour of casual conversation via italki weekly. Hope that answers it 🙂

@@johnbraat Thank you sir, it is really cool to hear how your experience is panning out. Congrats on the milestones so far! 🥳 I know language learning is not really a comparable thing across individuals for a variety of reasons, but it's still fantastic insight to see how people progress with time. I have also spent countless hours studying Japanese, and I think I can confidently say that vocabulary is still the thing that holds me back so much. I don't know how to "catch up" on this. Like I've spent many hours on grammar and kanji but now paid the price by not doing enough immersion. This year I changed that by going full immersion (primarily reading and podcasts) with virtually no grammar, but the more I read or listen, the more I can tell that there are sooooo many words that I don't know 🙈 The immersion route definitely helps get the words into my head (eventually!) but it feels a lot slower and less methodical than learning vocabulary directly. I don't suppose you have any advice for me on this given your experience? Anyway, long story short, this is probably the reason why I am keen to try Anki again despite my reservations about it 😅 So thank you once again for your helpful tutorial! PS. I also really want to try deliberate conversation practice this year, but I keep going back and forth on how valuable it is... Is this something you'd highly recommend?

The main issue I have with the practice test advice is that even though I already know it, I can't find any good free practice tests. I don't have any money so I can't afford to buy practice tests.
@johnbraat

I hear you. If it's about tests in school or uni I would recommend two things: 1. Try asking your seniors if they might have a picture of their old test, or if they remember what was in it 2. During the term, while going through the subject material ask the teacher/professor something like "What would an exam question for this topic look like?" I hope this helps. Thanks for watching and good luck in your exams! 🙂

Hey John, one issue I find myself running into is when I start the semester off regularly studying everything, it goes well for the first week, and then assignments, midterms, and other miscellaneous materials appear. What should I do in this case?
@johnbraat
6 ай бұрын
If I understand correctly, you are struggling with the work load. If that's the case, what I have done is focus on max 3 things (different subjects) per day to not split my attention too much. In my experience the hardest part about written assignments, like essays or even software, is to get started. Once you have started they kinda just flow. If that makes sense. What worked for me is to get a first draft/version done as quickly as possible (doesn't need to be perfect) and then let it sit for a few days so you can focus on something else. Get back to it after a few days and fix it up. It's amazing how your mind will work on these things in the background. For the technical assignments (maths/physics/algorithms etc.) I tended to just finish it in one or two consecutive sessions. For midterms and finals flashcards did the trick. IMO you MUST add flashcards to Anki and review them from the very start of the term. If that's not enough you either need to put in more hours, or you are getting distracted. I hope that answers your question. If not, feel free to ask away 🙂 Thanks for watching!

Studying longer hours is not necessarily better. Sprint may be better than marathon. By studying longer hours, you automatically become slower, you have to stop often to go to the bathroom, drink or eat or just rest. So by studying longer hours, paradoxically, you may be studying less. It may be better to study for a short period of time, but intensively and total focus. I have been studying Swedish for 3 years now mostly by translating song lyrics. I have translated almost 500 songs. I listen to the songs while reading the lyrics, I get vocabulary and pronunciation at the same time. It is a lot of fun and pleasant, I never get bored. I don't worry about memorization, I only care about understanding the lyrics. In the beginning I was barely translating one song in one hour. Now I can translate more than 8 songs in one hour. And I never study more than one hour per day.

Hi bro. How many japanese words do you know now? And when you watch an anime episode (around 20 minutes length), how many new words do you come across per episode?
@johnbraat
6 ай бұрын
Not sure of the exact word count, but It should be between 12000 and 14000. Unknown words, or lookups highly depend on the difficulty of the Anime. I'm currently watching Jojo's and probably have around 0-15 lookups per episode. Some words I have already seen and forgotten, some completely new. Thanks for watching!

Hii! I really liked your video. I was kind of hoping to find some video giving advice about how to learn a language, but then I found yours. Then it came to my mind that these recommendations could also help me with another issue: my lack of organisation. For instance, sometimes I tend to forget things that I was about to do just because I didn’t follow any kind of order, so these are very convenient. On another note, I’ve enjoyed those brief parts where you drew the little stick men (2:40 and 3:58). I find them amusing and useful to explain your video. It’s a great idea. Also, if I were you, I would write on the video description that it may be helpful as well for people who are trying to organise their lives better. Finally, I was very invested in the video because the book you showed in the beginning has been on my reading-list since forever. I reeeally should start with it. Keep it up!
