Came back over this today.. Watched the BBC Series when it was on, and the film. Do love the film for Sairose Ronan's performance as Jo was outstanding. But this... This captures Little Women in a completely different light.. All the family are so well cast, I love Emily Waston as Marmee and all four of the March siblings have their definitive voice in this version, plus the harsh realities of war. Makes me cry but this sequence is outstanding. When Beth takes and fumbles with the telegram and turns and her mum is waiting at the door alone to hug her.. Just stunning.

I read the book and have loved all the versions made into film. Each version had something the others didn't have & all have plenty to tell us. I understand that this was not the kind of book Louisa wanted to be her legacy, but was talked into it. I have watched this BBC version several times. The casting was beautiful, but I do wish they could have used American actors since it is the most American of novels. The actors were wonderful, but I would have to say that I would have preferred seeing an all American cast. We have plenty of wonderful American actors that could have done a great job in those roles. No one knows exactly who wrote Land of the Leal, but it is almost universally attributed to Robbie Burns. Could it have been written for the Civil War? or just sung then? From Oakland CA 2022
@annemccambridge9870

It was written by Lady Caroline Nairne, a Scottish contemporary of Burns, but it is usually mistakenly attributed to him as she kept her writing secret, even from her husband. Echoes of Jo's difficulties in 'Little Women'! There is an article on how this all happened on the BBC news site right now, January 2023.

Totally agree. The novel is a coming of age story. The war, in many ways, forces that growing up. The Gerwig movie sort of felt like it was missing an essential element of the conflict. Anyway, gorgeous song. We’ve come to enjoy singing this with our 4 year old daughter. Can’t wait to read the book with her.

This has for many years been a favorite Scottish song of mine, and I perform it often. We lost Mother in August, and the day after Thanksgiving (this past Friday) her little dog, Rusty, followed her to the Land of the Leal, where he is reunited with her and Daddy. Holidays are hard without those you love, and even losing a dear little dog casts a pall. This song speaks for my heart right now...and this version, while missing the Celtic feel, is still lovely, especially the harmonies. Silly Wizard has a lovely version, too.

Watched this last night and bawled my eyes out. Over 620,000 "Johns" were killed in the Civil War, as many as those who died in the previous wars and WWi and WWII combined. I know "John Brooke" survived, but can't help thinking of all those who did not and of the bereft Megs and Marmees left behind.

Fact is, it always broke my heart he died only after 10 years of marriage with Meg (same as real-life self John Pratt). One of the reasons why I never came to like Jo's Boys and the other books so well...
