Thats one sad looking venue.... cement block back wall, plastic folding chairs, concrete wall with sign stating the obvious, underscored in red with a threat. Looks like an auditorium set up from a Junior high School. Aside from the fact that your sitting outside in the elements.

This is my favorite orchestration of all the versions Sam has done of this song. There is just something about the lap steel that complements the mandolin perfectly. This steel player seems to have achieved Godlike abilities to match Sam's. I saw him and Al Perkins do this song during an intermission with Emmyloy Harris' band in Nashville in about 1994 when she wrapped up a tour at the Ryman, which had just opened to shows after rennovation.

Not the energy that I'm used to in a leftover salmon performance. I really miss the piano in their music. It was such an integral part of the fabric of their sound. Got tickets for their concert in Manteo, NC in October.

Saw them in 99 at the Birchmere. They even did a "Christmas Show". Have a great bootleg from Greensboro of the same year. Amazing. I wish there was a good video of Major Honker out there. There are a couple, but not the best. (There's even one where a Japanese band covered it)

Listened to a live version of this from Greensboro 1999, almost everyday for a year...same bunch, with Stuart Duncan replacing Gabe. Both great though. Sam 6:54.

So glad this was caught on tape. I went years looking for it because it is really inspired. It came at an "intermission" between fabulous bluegrass. It was outside but had some of the best acoustics of any performance I've been to, inside or out.

Clowns! Sam bush gives a funny set-up introduction that is missing in this video. I think the big joke here is the combination of the lyrics and the one mic style, plus the fact that Bela almost never sings, yet here he puts in a great high harmony and still has the confidence to clown around with Same and Jerry!

This concert has to be one of the uncontested apogees for these musicians, and may well have been one of THE shows that helped launch Gabe into the limelight that eventually led him into the ranks of the likes of the Punch Brothers; he was already a virtuoso talent at this young age! From the very first notes of my first bootleg of this show back in 2000 or so, I knew this was a special moment in history. I must've listened to this show well over 3,000 times, learned every note and one-liner from Sam by heart, yet never tire of hearing it all again. Thank you Telli Tom!

Same here - I don't know if I got it from bluegrassbox or one of the other early etree ftp servers at that time - but I wore that sucker out! Was my intro to 'newgrass' and the talents of each of the members. Sam: I smell something - do you guys smell something? Bela: I'm a little stuffed up.

LOVE IT!! (what Civil War era song is this melody based on. I recall it from the Ken Burns Civil War series?)
@MikeSealguitar

Reminiscent of Ashokun Farewell--which was featured heavily in the Ken Burns series. Not sure that Bela based his composition on that tune, but it has a similar vibe for sure. *If my memory serves, it's not actually a civil war era tune but a folk tune written in the 20th century. *I might be wrong there.
@ExplosiveBrohoof

@@MikeSealguitar Ashokan Farewell is, indeed, not a Civil War era tune. It's very commonly mistaken for one, though. The original song was written by Jay Ungar and Molly Mason.
