Takes me back to yesteryear, when I travelled the length and bredth of the country in a VW van with my terriers…a mixed bunch. There is, in my opinion no “best” terrier, it is dependant on the work it is required to carry out, the terrain and importantly…….the temperament of the handler!!!! I started with Jack Russells, my first had an overshot jaw but flushed many foxes and from her a few litters were bred, none inherited her jaw but every one went on to work, whether to fox, rat or both. I introduced the Border into the kennels and a few Patterdales over the years but if I was buying I would, without exception study the breeder carefully, the kennels before looking at a litter and of course both sire and dam. I met many genuine countrymen all those years ago and a good few rogues that would attempt to sell. you “To be sure it will make the best working terrier you’ve ever had!!! Those days are long gone, the last Border was buried in 2022 and now in my twilight years have a few Labradors as companions. I’m frequently asked…”Why do you have three Labradors?” My reply is always…”Because all the others have died.” Working terriers to rat is exciting fun, no better form of entertainment for a countryman, fast, requires great skill from the handler/terrier partnership and serves a most useful purpose. I have come across many so called terrier men that I wouldn’t trust with a goldfish, absolutely no idea of how to work a dog correctly. The guys working their Patterdales at the beginning of the clip know how it’s done, no fuss, quiet, relaxed and despatched the fox swiftly. Professional men. Now in the 21st century, the countryside is reducing in size by the day and with it the romantic visions of the poacher looking for something for the pot with his lurcher and terrier who would retire to the pub with his dogs before going to his bed….with his dogs!! Hunting with hounds, game shooting has brought in the men and women with money from the city but no idea or consideration of the ways of rural folk, are loud, boisterous, inconsiderate and more interested in networking than what is truly expected of them as participants. Those of a certain age have enjoyed the golden age of many things, the best of all are, without any doubt whatsoever, country pursuits, especially watching a youngster develope alongside his/her terrier, an inseparable bond.

The end of the true jack Russell terrier came with the kennel club recognising it as a breed. Most nowadays are show ponies with little or no true working capabilities. There are still a few bred for the job if you know where to go but not many
