Thanks, that vid just simplified my life. Just to add, my kit came with numbers 1 to 5, but only 11 and 15 for the other side with letters B, C and D, but it didn’t take long to work out that these would be 12, 13 and 14.

How did you get the black plastic part with the return spring on it out of the end of the key barrel??
@bobbaxter952

Why to you have to use 1-5 and 11-15 alternatively on these?? Key biting when i've made keys is just numbers 1-5.Thanks.

Great video, and 10 years later I'm now watching it. Thanks for doing this, I'm now on my 3rd bonnet lock but this time I've got the alloy one, no more plastic. Will take note on 15:40 👍

I also need my third on my ST. What a pile of crap that design is. I would be quite happy with a lever inside the car. Never had someone try to break into my engine bay lol!

Awesome thanks so much for this wouldn't have managed to replace my lock without this video. My keys are old and different amounts of wear so ended up removing one tumbler and filing the others so that they were flush with the barrel.

Could find nothing wrong with our mechanism other than white cross piece decided to separate from the cable end one day, had the car from nearly new, no problems ever with the bonnet until one day it wouldnt open 😡😡, its a 2010, just couldn't get the grille out without breaking, no way i could get to the bolts on the catch, long screw driver through the grille tapped into the mech wouldn't work, had to remove the under trays, reach up n pull barrel from back of the grille, then carfull smash n pull the cable untill i could pull it out, long sharp flat blade screwdriver into the face of the white cross, it then turned very easily and opened,, removed the mechanism from other sons mk2 focus the same day (while it still worked) currently using long screwdriver to open each car while we're waiting for the metal upgraded parts to arive,

I just realised how old this video is, but your an absolute star my sons bonnet didn't open after I put a different style grille in for him, even though I was extremely careful with the lock, but the grille didn't give up easily and I didn't check before I closed the bonnet doh😣....... Fishing forceps pulled the rubber boot off, pushed forceps into plastic pushed lock with the key and 20 seconds after pulling the rubber boot off, I was in....... Thanks again 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Thanks for the video, it worked perfectly. My kit had 8 springs and no number 12s which I think it needed 2 but it wasn't an issue. My only problem was I could not get one of the small pins in at the end, it came unrolled. I will look for something else I can hammer in. EDIT - I hammered out the long pin from the old barrel and then snipped it to size once it was in place.

Very Nice video, I would like to add that mark the lock sides A and B start with side A insert key pin in the first hole without spring, to check push it back with your nail (Because you are not using spring) if it fits properly take it out and make a note on paper and than try another key pin in second hole for example Side A= 1-11-2-12 Side B 3-13-4-14 In this way you will not damage the springs or you will not lose them and you will not find it difficult to hold few and try another one,,,Once you get all right just put all springs in along with key pins togeather. Also once barrel is in cylinder (before pushing/strocking black plastic thing) put boths side locks in place and wrap your side locks with sello tape so that they will hold the barrel other wise it will slip out and you have to find spring and lock pins(happend with me twice) its a critical step..... you can remove sellotape afterwards before final assembly and thanks for the video highly appreciated.

What an amazing tutorial. I was quoted £300 by a Ford garage (yes, that is not a typo!) to get my bonnet working again, and I would have ended up with a 2 x key car! Of course, if Ford had have designed a proper bonnet release in the first place, you know, like a lever in the cabin (!), it would have saved us all alot of grief...

Thanks for this. Couldn't find any mechanics keen on building the cylinder. Convinced one guy that I'll do the cylinder build if he could do everything else. Thankfully he agreed and managed to get it all sorted. I did manage to drop the springs a few times but got there in the end. This tutorial was great. Thanks again.

No instructions came with the purchase of the new unit, so I had a go at trying to figure it out myself as I'm pretty logically minded. Got about half of it correct, but resigned myself to having to take it it in to a garage. This video explained all the gaps in my guessing, and I will crack on again when I get home! Thanks!

Great video : purchased a repair kit on Ebay , no instructions, and a great pile of brass bits amongst other things.Watched your video several times and saw how to re-build the lock.Had a few mishaps, which resulted in springs & brass bits everywhere - several times :-(Eventually as I re-built the barrel, I wrote the brass numbers on the barrel with an permanent pen, against where they went.I could then rebuild when I had another mishap !I did finish by using a fine piece of emery paper, with the key in the lock, just to take off any high spots on the brass bits.Thanks
