I would love to have the opportunity to keep going into the mountains as long as I physically can. Beautiful work here, well done.

As a young climber I met Fred in Anchorage Alaska in 1992 or 1993 he was giving a slide show at UAA we were completely blown away by it and how many places and first accents he did. Respect 🙏

Awesome video, really puts Fred's accomplishments into focus. Thank you. I met Fred several times. The last time I saw him was in Indian Cove at JT. What a legend. So committed, so inspiring.

Thank you for paying respects to an elder. We need more of that these days. Not all elders are conservatives.

Lowell, I don’t know you, but I can tell you that Fred was a major influence for my entire life. I climbed in the late 1969s through the the mid 1990s. I contributed first ascents to his guides such as the first ascent of the north face of Dragontail in 1970 with my partner Chuck Sink. He inspired me to dream and change my sector of the world. I created the mountain school at the 9th Infantry Division at Fort Lewis and his spirit carried me into creation and mentoring like-wise spirited adventurists into the wilds as well as the fields of engineering and science. My personal success I tribute to Fred and other’s like him such as Yvon Chouinard (founder of what is now Black Diamond). Fred is a true inspiration to all who tread in his footsteps.

This presentation was prepared by Lowell Skoog for Fred Beckey's public memorial held at The Mountaineers Program Center in Seattle, Washington on December 3, 2017. This version was updated after the memorial by adding photo credits. This video has been embedded in a page on Alpenglow.org that provides detailed information about the photos and movies contained within. The last photo of him tells so much of the man. really moving photo. It took balls to live the life he choose, its one thing to do it in your teens, 20's,30's and even 40's but all your life? R.I.P. Amazing man

One of the best/funniest conversations that I have ever had in my life was with Fred while we were standing in my brother's kitchen about ten years ago. It was late at night and Fred was about to retire for the evening (he would often sleep at my brother's place on his many trips to the Canadian Rockies) and I had consumed about two or three beers too many. Anyway, it was just the two of us and I was suffering a serious case of laryngitis and Fred, being Fred, was getting on in years and was a little hard of hearing. We stood there for about an hour while Fred was telling me some incredible stories about some of his past conquests ... mostly about some of the women he had met over the years and a few about the mountains that he had climbed. We had chatted many times over the years but that night he couldn't hear a word that I was saying but he kept me laughing the entire time. For anyone who knew him, Fred was, without question, as rough around the edges as the mountains he climbed but he was truly one of the most unique souls that ever walked the planet. I miss you Fred. RIP, or should I say CIP (Climb in Peace). I hope that your final ascent was a good one.
