Thanks for your comment! There are a few boxes on the market but I didn't think they were big enough. That is why I built my own box. As to securing the bottom of the box - I didn't want a burglar proof delivery box. I designed the box to be a deterrent from thieves who spontaneously walk/drive by. If the delivery is out in the open it is more likely to be stolen. Certainly you can tweak my concept and add a bottom and anchor it down. I didn't see a need to do either.

Certainly that is a concern. I thought of that dynamic when I created the specs for the unit. That is why I have the lid in what looks like a locked position. Also the lid is heavy for a youngster to push up. Perhaps it would be prudent to have a release latch inside the unit if someone gets inside. I do have a note at the bottom of the front door directing the delivery person to drop the parcel in the box. I’ve had a 98% success rate with deliveries put in the box. I built a big porch box with hasp, I leave the padlock hanging open, there are 2 colorful signs on it with very simple and clear instructions, and it cannot be missed when walking towards my house. 3 deliveries since I installed the box and the delivery people did not use it. Are they in such a hurry that they won't use it, or do they just not care? UPS tells me to leave a note for the driver so they can "Make a choice of what to do with the package" or pay for the MyChoice option which allows you to tell the driver what to do with the package---The delivery people walk right by the box, WHY should i pay just to tell them to use a box they are walking by?

If you paint the box the same color as your porch, turn it around so it backed up against the front railing of the porch (face the front door not the street) and put a thick layer of fake greenery ie ivy leaves covering the side of the box that faces the street then it cannot b seen from the street. place a lock on a hook near the latch, so the delivery driver can place a pkg in the box then lock it. put note near doorbell that all deliveries are to b placed in the bin and locked up. we had all our deliveries placed behind a large chair near the front door; they could not b seen from the street. worked fine. if u get more than 1 pkg per day; dont use this method; pick up at depot instead.

In reality, the simple stuff works. It's large enough that someone won't think very long about carrying it off. It's big enough to receive larger packages (which most commercially provided designs fail in a big way). It is just secure enough to keep the lazy thief from taking any effort to get in. I personally would drop the flag. The lock wedge is enough of a flag since it won't stay in place if the lid has been opened and you will know the lid has been lifted. In this case, not having a bottom makes no difference since it's more of a visual deterrent than a security device. I am collecting links to KZitem video's that I can highlight on the Package Vault Project website (in process right now) and eventually in a series of video's of people like you that have taken to porch pirate prevention measures to make sure you get to keep what you paid for. Maybe the exposure will bring more people to your design. Yours is one more porch these rats won't be stealing from. Thumbs Up!
