My first quality guitar thst I bought was a Martin D-18 that I bought in 1973 when I was 12 years old for $459.00. I loved that guitar. Until I ran out of money amass had no food. When I lived in California after I separated from government service after 15 years, I could busk and make enough money to live. Unfortunately, I was in the middle of nowhere in the Midwest. I didn't have that option and so I had to get a loan to eat. I wasn't able to find a job and therefore I lost my dream guitar. I've never had another Martin guitar and I miss the quality of the sound of my guitar. Sure, I've gotten gigs playing and singing since then. Playing in bands and by myself, however I've never been able to buy another Martin that had the same quality of sound that my D-18 had. I've bought other guitars that were well made and equivalent to that D-18 in price, but never equaled the sound. Sorry, seeing the Martin factory in Nazareth, Pennsylvania just brought those memories back to me. Rich Hall can make me laugh, but he can also remind me of things that aren't here any longer. The thing about that time for me was that I had been living with my white father and after being in the military, it was just little old Cherokee me. That's right, I was a Cherokee Indian and it didn't matter that I was not fully Cherokee, where I lived I was just another Indian and likely an alcoholic, even though I didn't drink alcohol at all. It didn't matter, I was a minority and suspect. It didn't matter that I spent 15 years serving in the military, nope, not at all. Amazing place.

It's totally false to say that monks never worked at all. Many monks worked in the fields of thier abbeys and others did clerical work like writing books, keeping records of entire parishes ( the word CLERK comes from that), and lots of other duties. Many of them very mundane ., others creative ( they invented Chartreuse, a green licqeur), made beaautiful hand decorated books, and all manner of everyday things .

We inherited the British caste system at first. But were slowly weaned away, more and more, as our Americanism slowly set in deeper. Now it's the Protestant Work ethic that has mercilessly deprived the poorest, neediest and less able . A phoney and utterly unchristian ethic that devalues people in a way Jesus never did.

Bad government has a lot to do with poverty of the American citizen. We need to stop importing more tens of millions of competitors for the resources that the Poor and lower middle class citizenry need. Housing is one of the most glaring examples. We have a severe low-cost housing shortage.

"Work Ethic" is a phrase used by those who have no intention of working. It means doing that which one has no desire to do. The anti-thesis of fulfillment.

An entire race of people were abused and ignored or killed just so an increasing number of farmers who were incapable of valuing a different way of life chased empty land and money and mine materials and would kill to do it, greedy cretins in place of sustainability, they would lie or cheat or steal to achieve their aims. The natives were mostly replaced with European trash and it was mostly violent and unjust and not much improved until the greedy cretins had been everywhere in North America and ruined what was three completely. A cultural disaster too. Very unimpressive.✌️❤️🇬🇧

This is precisely the misery forced on people so they could live a life, mill work in the 19th century was as bad as a prisoner of war camp in the 20th century. Pay was terrible, health and safety non existent and labour laws never existed so employees could be abused anytime all the time, you were better off partly starving on a farm with not much money. It was that bad. 21st century immortality and automation will save us from that world of organised injustice ✌️❤️🇬🇧

Machines and automation have saved 1000’s of people from the misery and unreliability of paid labour and the injustice of employment availability which always failed people routinely and condemned many to poverty, its was a rubbish system. Not worthy of resurrecting ✌️❤️🇬🇧

Monks worked. Didn't they make clean beer? Before the printing press they rewrote books so there as more than one copy. We still today use DC and AC and the rest of the symbols and nomenclature that allows our feeblest minds to know which way the batteries fit in their music listening devices. Franklin was definitely a great engineering scientist. Political Engineer fits as a biograph. So Franklin never even ran for President far as I know while he had every right to the office and I wish he had been Washington's competitor and the winner. I love the Post Office. I must despise those of my life's Congresses with their ignorant misdirected goals finding nothing except destruction of the US Postal Service that has had a General and ought still.

When I read Jim Henson's biography, I was struck at the section where they discussed the clash of American and British labor cultures when The Muppet Show started filming in the UK. Henson and his creative team were used to long American workdays, and were shocked when the English technical crews stopped work the instant the clock struck five.

Rich youve a love of comedy and history. Wed be good friends if you were a shlub, no named shlub, like me. Ive been in construction my whole life. I love work and hate it at same time. I love the idea of the american dream and opportunity but unfortunately the oligarchs have taken over all the mom n pop industries. Hardware stores are home Depot and lowes. Farms have become owned by big biz along with the few media outlets and medical industry. The opportunity once available has turned into full time jobs that no longer pay a living wage. In the 50s and 60s one man could afford a house 2 cars with a family of 4 or 5. There was a strong viable middle class. Now 2 working adults cant afford a home 2 cars with one kid.

I could have injected some new ideas on a number of points but I didn't. One thing that should be stated is that this is humanity's a of lurching forward. It's not stylish sometimes.

The willingness of Westerners in general to deal with fact Vs fiction, reality Vs myth, especially now when facing the prospect of a wholly man-made extinction event, is apparent in the ascendancy of Heckle and Jeckle, Trump and Jordan Peterson, the "reds under the beds", fear-mongering Joshep McCarthy of the modern era.

It's fascinating how US followed UK in its early days and now we're following them. De regulation, erosion of workers' rights, demonising sections of society, ultra right wing politics, deranged politicians. We just follow.

I really like Rich Hall but this is just the opinions of people who never worked a day in their lifes giving their opinions about work based on other people's artistic visions of work. Work has always given me the freedom to be an individual in a society that wants to confine everyone to collectotive opinions.
