The counter culture ruined my life;no white picket fence for me. But no mortgage,no divorce,no debt,no fealty to the man,no suit and tie,no mind numbing career,no plan,no limits..I could go on.Everything I was told not to do,I did,and I survived it all, with no regrets

I was lucky enough to see Ginsberg speak at an event in the mid-late 90's at Adelphi University in Long Island. Seeing him in person after having been a student of the Beat Generation for years, was like seeing a myth standing and breathing in front of you. I'll always treasure it.

Listening to the cadence with which he reads this I am reminded again and again of Jim Morison's monologue in "Peace Frog". The resemblance is too similar. I'm convinced Jim Morison must have heard this or something like it at some point.

This is the most important poem of the 20th century. It also stands with the pantheon of all poetry that we as a culture hold up as the merging of a brilliant mind with the soulful combination of words and expression. It is a masterpiece. His reading of it is perfection.

Here's an off the cuff Ginsberg poem that took me about an hour to write and then edit. Didn't even try to match Ginsberg in quality. Cheers: sunken souls tripping and screaming deep into the void, a hollow ripe with shifting calculations: dense fathoms filling the space between the megamind dark... and the truth behind the very shade of things, of commonplace metaphorical realities lurking everywhere, omnipresently-- with the unfailing purpose to seed, to cloud, and to kill. From infinite shadow galleries come myriad invitations to hell, wrapped up as nice little warning previews which do nothing but strip the soul of its substance: corpse-ridden flames and organ-smooth fire; smothering bereftment with a gunmetal dome over it; swimming through the aftermath of ignition of filth, compromising/comprising structurally damaged firmamentation, crimson "sky," a veritable coagulation of space alongside the worrisome chewing open of sun & smoke or simply the corrupted will of the feralizing, blind, and saintly, to high fervor and inherent in their new nocturnal amorphic nature, now. remembrance, don't you fear, you intrepid pilgrim, you still know why you're here; a lofty climax by miracle physics / human biology magic, convalescence, six ft. under, upward between the bones & buckets of blood, scattered haphazardly askew & littering with the fetid soot the cruel, rational, and fair... fiberous muscle matter tearing themselves away, in tendrils, & loose, leprosy flesh simply sliding off in the form of a sprinting snail. that one had me sorta stumped. something having an ambition to sever their ties to ascendency; ties separating a thing's still, underground nature, from what it could hope to someday dream of becoming in another, anachronistic time and place until their niche holistic duties, and silent presence which is their charge, are both said and done resolutely. hell's slogging prisoners staring with wild-eyed surprise into themselves, framing their lives in disrepairing residential little puddles, fed shit by greymatter- bitter mushrooms, skull caps or muted skull caps or pew rows of detached savior savants, slowly slurping shit off bones and grinders beyond the cruel, rational, or fair... stasis legitimacy vs. the ritual reintegration of soul and spirit; we as people go through grandiose sin and suffering, & only what came before: the grand mess of stational divide following our collective last gasp

I have a great deal of gratitude for the poets and comedians of this time who shouldered their own freedoms in the selfless and righteous cause of speaking freely the truth about their very paranoid and violent Cold War administrations. It’s really because of people like Ginsberg, Lenny Bruce and Dylan that the option to publicly speak whatever we feel isn’t going to bring us before a senate committee. Even Pete Seeger was considered a threat, and he was on par with Mr. Rodgers.

If you take the time to get out of your own selfishness and really listen to the words, you will be inspired. Poetry is one’s love of words, words, words.
