I've never considered this episode in my top list, but that's some awesome writing there. Of course it would be in Season 5, the peak season of TNG

I always felt Riker has truly understood Klingon culture as much as Worf has but also the most critical about it with its more question traditions like this one.

if i served on the enterprise, i wouldnt want worf to die, but if it were tasha yar in the same situation, i wouldnt just bring the knife, id do it for her. since the 90's or whenever this show was on the air, i hated her. she was a horrible addition to this show, and i was SO happy when that oily blob killed her.

The events of this episode had a major part in helping Worf become the kind of Klingon he is during DS9, one of many. He honors Klingon tradition, but recognizing his deep unwillingness to be rigid makes him glorious and it’s potentially inspiring. Riker realizes that Worf wanting this is actually him being selfish and hypocritical. If he was really like his people, he wouldn’t even consider Alexander’s youth as a factor, but he does, because Worf is not like other Klingons, in a good way. In the end, he ultimately decides to fight for his life over ending what’s traditionally considered a disgraceful state, so his friends don’t need to be drag into his suffering and his family can grow under his witness as the Son of Mogh and a Klingon. It’s moments like these and his experiences as a Starfleet Officer and a Klingon far from a home where honor is still fickle, with his primary exposure being their legends, that shape Worf into the ultimate Klingon.

I just watched this episode and I loved that Picard immediately understood. I think Beverley Crusher came off completely ridiculous being angry with the other doctor for 'gambling' on a virtually dead man anyways.

If Riker had been a Christian, he could've just refused to kill Worf on religious grounds, that way there wouldn't have been any crisis of conscience.
@GreyTide
Жыл бұрын
I don't think Rick Burman or Gene Roddenberry were really into religion like that, enough to make any of the bridge crew people of faith. Not only that, but Rick Burman was apparently always fighting against this feeling like no good drama could arise from Gene's vision of a future free from conflict. That and the simple explanation doesn't really make for as dramatic a scene. Falling on the faith doesn't evoke the same call to duty or morality as simply asserting one's faith. The faith should be the thing that gives them the strength to make the kinds of arguments Riker is making.

I'd completely agree with Worf here, if it weren't for his son's existence. Your life belongs to you, it is yours to say what you want to do with it, even up to and including suicide. However, the moment you have a child, someone who looks up to you for love and guidance, your life is no longer your own. It is, at least partially, theirs now. You owe it to them. It is theirs by birthright. To rip something like that from the life of a child who has grown to love and care for you. You're not just killing yourself. You're killing a part of them too. The part of yourself that you put inside of them as you nurtured and guided them. Maybe once they've reached adulthood things might change, honestly I haven't taken the time to put thought into it, but while your actions still have direct absolute control over them, suicide ceases to be a morally acceptable option.

Out of all the comments I can't remember any that focus on the paternal obligation as a primary argument against the circumstances. Maybe my memory is bad but it was interesting to see that opening. I will read the rest of your comment when I have time.

Wow, I hadn't thought about Alexander at all. I was always angry at Riker for not helping a true friend. I couldn't agree more with Worf, I really felt they should have helped him with what he wanted more than ever, but I had completely forgotten about the kid. It sure does make me think about what is morally right in this kind of situation as I would've felt just like Worf.

Ultimately I do accept that right of self determination, but friends and family have the right, and I'd say obligation, to try and talk you out of it, in case you are simply not in your right mind or haven't fully considered all the options. If your resolve is sound and absolute, then it won't matter and you can go through with your plan.

I'd like to think that Riker name dropping Marla Aster and then Tasha got to Worf, since Tasha was a close friend, and Marla Aster died under his command, and he had to live with that guilt.
