He was a genuine warmhearted individual. Sadly, I wish more actors were like him. he’s one of my probably top 10 favorite characters. My favorite well my old favorite until he told me to force myself with Luke Skywalker. Sorry I can’t separate the shit bag Mark Hamill from the character. It pains me to say that it really does. I love Star Trek. I love Star Wars😊

I met James briefly inside a Scottish pub in San Francisco. He was completely inebriated, while shouting Scottish obscenities at the crowd, using his characteristic "Scotty" accent from Star Trek. Every time he did so, enthusiastic onlookers cheered him on and bought him more rounds, thus encouraging the misbehavior. I was so surprised to see this and laughed so hard that I choked on my beer and spilled it everywhere. He chuckled and quickly bought me another. As he did so, he looked me square in the eye and said, "Laddie, you've committed a very serious offense against the Federation and must make amends! Beertender, bring this man another!" He was carrying a communicator prop with him, and kept yelling into it that the warp engines were about to explode and that the captain needed to reduce power, etc. Word traveled fast and the bar quickly became overran with enthusiastic fans, anxious to buy the legend another shot. I stepped outside to escape the crowd and a few moments later, James staggered out onto the curb and shouted into his communicator for a taxi. There were already several taxis waiting at the chance to drive the celebrity... and off he went. He was on the news the next day with a fireman providing a brief statement. Several fans had apparently joined him at his hotel and they continued the debauchery late into the evening. At some point, James realized that his communicator had stopped communicating with Captain Kirk. Then someone concocted a brilliant plan to signal the Enterprise (that lay in geosynchronous orbit around the earth) so they could all be beamed aboard for more booze. So they lit a bonfire atop the hotel roof to gain the attention of Spock's sensors! There was no mention of any arrests or charges being pressed, so Id assume they were all allowed to walk away "Scott-free" for the next bar. My admiration for the man has grown to new heights and we are all lucky to have enjoyed in his drunken humor.

One thing that's pretty evident is that the whole cast really cared about the show. Doohan was very into it. Such a waste that they canceled it after only 3 seasons. It would have been cancelled after the 2nd season, but for the million fan letters written in to save it. But, ST's days were numbered anyway. Season 3, the writing took a dive, and there was some reorganization in the management (according to Nimoy). Plus they moved it to a Friday nite time slot, so it was on a death march. I think in the entertainment biz, there's a ton of politicking, and everyone has their pet project. So if extra resources are needed, well, take the budget from Star Trek. Dumb move. It'd be great to call out the losers who conspired to cancel the show. Give 'em the credit they deserve.

I remember , with a mixture of sadness and outrage , that James Doohan was mugged at a cashpoint and the thief ran off with his money - when JD was a frail old man - how low can anyone get ? I just hoped at the time that Worf , or any of the Klingons would get the perp and give him a 'Glasgow Kiss' .

My Dad was a British Infantry soldier on the D-day beaches. Same as Mr Doohan. That's why I love him, and am so happy that this Canadian soldier who fought in the slaughterhouse of D-day, found wealth, adulation, love and fame, in later years, as an actor in an iconic TV show. He bloody deserved it. To be financially secure, and to find something he loved doing, and for people to love him for doing it ❤ All the other soldiers on D-day, came home to relatively unspectacular, normal lives. Jimmy became a famous, loved icon. God bless him.

"Who threw the first punch" Captain Kirk from the episode "troubles with tribbles" Seeing what follows after this line from that episode is what epitomizes Scotty from Star Trek. So much so that the entire scene was so iconic that it was worked into an episode of Deep Space Nine (Deep Space Nine - Trials and Tribble-ations) decades after the original star trek.

A few years later I saw James Doohan at a Star Trek convention in Ottawa, Canada, at the Chateau Laurier. I shook his hand and he really seemed genuinely thrilled to be there. He was promoting Star Trek VI at the time. Onstage he talked about how he hated Shatner and his horses, and that he also hated the "I know this ship like the back of my hand" scene. RIP, James!

Doohan was a really gifted voice actor. He did so many uncredited voiceovers in the original show, and later for the animated series. His voice for Sargon, especially, was so nicely done it was decades before I realized it was even him.

He's gotta be the luckiest celebrity. Some say he was typecast and was ruined because of Star Trek (Meaning he couldn't get roles much unlike Shaner and maybe Nimoy or Takei. He got with his 2nd wife, Wende, when he was 54 and she was 17. Married her when she was 18. They had two kids together. No one said anything. Disgusting pedo bastard.

I saw James Doohan in 1986 (I think) in Dallas, TX @ the Big Convention Center. A friend of mine & I went. My friend had his young son with him & I had mine. That was just such a thrill. About 20 or so years, my wife & I saw George Takei in Fort Worth, TX at Bass Hall downtown (I think that’s right). That was very cool too.

I like when he almost entirely drops the Irish/Scot accent and talks like an average Canuck. Funny how Americans like to think they're the center of the universe and yet Roddenberry put two Canadians in charge of the Enterprise - Shatner and Doohan.
