Innovative. That's the word I would use. I mean, let's face it. There's no such thing as the *best* . There are just guys like Jojo and Buddy Rich and a few others, who are *unsurpassed* in their abilities. What I like particularly about Jojo is his inventiveness; his unique style. He dices up time in his own original way, while still sticking to certain conventions of music (without which he would just sound like a runaway truck on a bumpy road). I don't know anything, really, about the other members of Nerve, other than they are obviously very tight, excellent musicians who seem to think, musically, along the same lines. Their combination of abilities is fascinating.

Please Hollywood hire these guys and BADBADNOTGOOD to make SciFi movies musics, we're tired of Zimmer and Goransson's poor compositions... we want actual music in sci fi for fck sake ! like 2001 Space Odyssey and 1982 Blade Runner !

I used to go see Jojo and Nerve in the basement of Izzy Bar in NYC every week in the summer of 1998. It was incredible. This track reminds me of listening to Plug and Photek around that time.

@@XxStrongDrums1996xX I only sort of remember a few people. Tim Lefebvre was usually on bass, and a Japanese guy (can’t remember the name) who played synths and trumpet. A couple times when Jojo wasn’t there, Zach Danziger filled in on drums. He’s also a monster on the kit, and I think he had a band at the time called Boomish. It was a small room, and I don’t think there was a stage. So everyone was basically right next to the band. What sticks out in my mind is them blazing over a riff from In a Silent Way by Miles Davis.

@@alexposilkin9683 that's pretty rad. How did the sound of the group then differ from now? Was it more of a jazz trio sound, or was it pretty developed into an electronic sound by that point?
@alexposilkin9683

@@XxStrongDrums1996xX they were pretty dialed in to the electronic sound of the time, but able to improvise. They were fully into drum n bass/jungle, breakbeat, and I think he would play some uk garage type beats. I think the number of musicians also differed from week to week. It was a residency at this small venue/bar, so I’m guessing Jojo tried to get whoever he wanted. I first saw Nerve at Modern Drummer Fest 1998, which is how I learned about the residency. You can see footage from the fest on YT but really just his solo from that day.

Maybe it has to do with keeping time with poly rhythms. I know many drummers, including myself, chewed gum to keep off time counting alive.
