I’ve always advocated that every northern liberal needs to talk to a southern liberal for the express purpose of “calming his yankee ass down”. This documentary does a damn good job of this.

An excellent documentary and it brought back so many memories for me personally. I'm from the UK but have visited many of the places Rich mentions. I even met Jerry Reed and he gave me a belt buckle from the movie "Gator" he made with Burt Reynolds. Happy memories!

Hillbilly came from Ireland, not the northern newspaper or Scotland. It was originally the northern Ireland hill people who supported King William. Brought to this country it changed to Hillbilly. Long Hot Summer by William Faulkner is beloved by Southerners, as is To Kill a Mockingbird.by Harper Lee. How about Author Pat Conroy who refused to accept how black people on Daufuskie Island, SC were treated.

You are a fool for the segment about the South rising again. In all my life I've never heard a human being say that. Georgia is the largest state east of the Mississippi, and the second most populated in the south to Florida. The majority of the people who live here are not even from Georgia. Our values have nothing to do with your presentation. We are now a purple state that isn't dominated by either party. I was born here, and I will probably die here, but not because I haven't lived all over the country. It suits my personality better only.

So what do we think of this, about 10 years later, after the south seems to be overwhelmingly MAGA conservative? Doesn't that confirm what we've been told about "the south"? I'm honestly asking. I'm not American.

I keep coming back to this documentary when someone’s oversimplification and/or insulting caricature of the south pisses me off enough to legit upset me. It’s a necessity balm to my nerves sometimes, in a world that wants to flatten the south’s diversity, history, and art into a singular unflattering stereotype.

I wonder if it is an insecurity or sense of inferiority that stem some his wilder claims, people have been stomping their feet and howling at the moon to music far more raucous than anything Sun Records put out for centuries, Russian folk, Hungarian Gypsy (in particular) or even a Yiddish wedding are but a few examples. And the songs from the cotton fields are rooted in the sea shanties slaves would hear over and over from the ship's sailors transporting them. America didn't light the fire Mr Hall, and that's OK. Your country's contribution is still valid and requires no embellishment.

01:27:02 It's Sad to think that today in Germany and Europe there has been a resurgence of the far right. Germany was DEFEATED and DIVIDED for years yet today you have a bunch of skin-headed little Nazi turds goose-stepping. So people WILL NEVER LEARN.

In high school, my history teacher would show a movie once a week so he could have a day off from teaching, we knew this because the films shown often had nothing to do with what we were currently studying. I wish ee could have had a teacher who was creative, intelligent and funny like aRich Hall.

Pretty accurate. But you can cut the irony with a knife now that we know Obama DID lie about corporatist \fascist immigration scheme to depress wages, he's arguably as big of a war criminal as the Bush family & lies come out of his mouth seemingly every day about the rising of the seas whilst living in a mansion on Martha's Vineyard.

My Dad's Texan. KKK still has active members in my extended family there. 'Southern Hospitality' begins and ends with a glass of iced tea as far as I ever saw. Violence is still part of every decision made in the South. Fear of your neighbors seems to dictate what you can and cannot do in Texas. No matter their claim to free living. Some sterotypes exist because they are real and true.

Someone has to make an analysis based on the real principles involved: conservatism and liberalism. Parties may shift, but one thing is constant all throughout: the fight between those that want to see progress and improvement in culture, and those that fight to preserve the past at any cost. "We never did consider black people human beings equal to whites and we aren't gonna let that every happen." "Women have a place, and that is too serve men." "Homosexuality is a sickness that will be driven or by force if necessary." They were Democrats to start, and the liberal Republican abolitionists fought to create a new world were black people were just as free as whites to pursue their dreams. Conservatives fight this to the present day, but at a certain point they stopped identifying as Democrats and moved to the Republican party. To prove this go to any Klan meeting, and meeting of neo-nazis and white supremacists, and ask for Democrats. You'll find none. Not all Republicans are racist, but most racists are definitely Republicans. Today we have the Republican Trump who preaches the imperative to move America back to a time before modern values of equality were established, to the "better days" when people all "knew their place". Conservatives in the South fighting to roll things back to the time when "American values" of racism, misogyny, and homophobia were the norm, and straight white men were undisputed on top of society with dominion over all. They have been beaten every single time, most notably in the civil war, and they will continue to be beaten forever in America.

The South invented rock'n'roll, then proceeds to hate itself for its own creation. The Blacks invent the blues. White Southerners: we gotta kill those blacks. People from the North and as far as Europe transform rock'n'roll into an international cultural phenomenon. White southerners: Kill those dirty long-hair hippies. But are they FRIENDLY....
