Devo about not putting the rotor back on :'( Thanks for the vid was some good comedic bits mixed in there. The angle grinder was gold. Thanks mate!

The number of poles actually determines the rpm. So you can't have the same number of poles and a different rpm. 2 poles is the minimum you need to make a functional motor so that is as fast as you can get with a given frequency. Because of inefficiencies though you never quite reach that theoretical maximum. In the US we use 60Hz AC. Assuming one cycle equals one rotation, that is 60 rotations a second, times 60 seconds is 3600 rotations per minute.

Thank you! I was close to giving up on my homebrew RPC because of horrendous power factor and voltage imbalance issues, but this motivates me to give balancing it another go. Given that it has been a few years since you posted this, how is it working for you? I was curious about the pony motor since the point of it was to avoid start capacitors and controls for them on your idler, but since the pony motor itself has capacitors and a centrifugal switch to cut the start cap in and out, has this worked out to be a low-maintenance option?

I'm assuming you are an electrician, and obviously the power is OFF. But AS a commercial electrician, I wouldn't keep touching those busses like you do. "Why? it's off!" Because my dumb ass would forget and have them on and touch them. I don't touch for any reason once I have my power wired in and it's live. Just my opinion, your video kept making me nervous. LOL. BUT VERY INFORMATIVE! THANK YOU Matt.

A great Video Matt! It covers the essentials very well as regards to using a pony motor. The huge reduction in the inrush current on starting the idler results in the much simpler electrical design. I am driving a 1/2 hp motor on a polisher machine from a 2 hp idler. I recall, the idler was drawing a little over 5 amps on each of the 220V input legs to the idler .... before any capacitors. Thank You very much.

I got lost at the end where you discuss all the balancing as to not understanding which capacitors were hooked to which lines. A drawing would be nice or a comment saying xmfd was connected between A-B, x mfd was hooked to B-C, x mfd power factor was connected to which were they were connected.

Mad Matt I'm forever replacing the inner and outer door handles on my 95 Accent, the dashboard had more cracks than the sand in the Sahara desert. Lol, I replaced it with a Nissan B13 or B14 dashboard, not sure which one. My wife is the one who did the purchase after she tricked me, said she needed $1,500 TT dollar's to go see the Doctor. 😁 I had to do some cutting to make it fit and lots of rewiring with the help from my factory spec manual, and online info for the Nissan gauges. Now I have a tac gauge and transmission selector position lights in dash, it took almost 3mts to complete. But it's much better than the original.

Back in 1970s a friend had set up using a huge motor with about a 2” shaft for converter. We would spin it with our feet to at least over 100 rpm to get it started. I always wondered just how it was hooked up. One thing I learned from KZitem videos is that none of them show how it works. They show “ I used a this motor to run a that motor “ “ I made a box and use circuit breakers for wire connectors “ Still looking for one that shows how it works

A start capacitor and a relay will start your 15 hp with the touch of a switch. That would eliminate the small starting motor and make the unit more compact as well. Another option I’ve seen is a drill with a coupler on the end of the shaft that pulls off once it’s running. Either way, really good job.

This was a great video makes me confident I can make one myself... I have 3 motors.... largest is a 7.5 hp then the ones I want to use are a 5hp and 3hp... question even when you balance this motor shouldnt you also balance any other motors 3rd phase you use on the circuit? Or you just need the voltages close to create a strong stage 3rd leg so as to not have to do this to other motors being used in the shop... Maybe a good idea to add capacitors on the switching end of each motor(machine) in the circuit so they come online the same time as the machine your trying to use... I think that is a smart idea myself (to balance each motor individually) before running them long periods in the circuit... any thoughts?

Remove the pony starter and do a simple contactor and capacitor starting circuit. However, if you're just running three phase motors, dump the converters and just install single to 3 phase VFD drives. The are so much better and give your machine far more speed control capabilities, like an infinite transmission. Single to three phase VFD's up to 7.5HP are usually between $100 to $300 depending on how Chinese you go.
@bikefarmtaiwan1800

I'd agree with you except for the fact that VFD are tuned to one motor so if you have several motors to run a RPC is much more versatile albeit that you do not have speed control like with a VFD

Anwar Alfaqeeh Alhusseini , your biggest motor should not exceed 50% hp of your phase convertor but you can run up to 3 times the convertor hp provided you don’t start them all at once. I have a 15 hp convertor have run as much as 35hp with it and start a few machines before starting my 12 hp machine. Once the 12 hp is running the others can be shutdown, they just provide the extra power for start up.

Yes sir can't find anything on this year and model had the front wheel lock up and making a clunking noise like a bad axile and jacked it up and tire wouldn't spin. Took the brakes completely off and it still wouldn't turn and tried KZitem the video couldn't find nothing didn't have any sign of a bad wheel bearing wheel was tight shook it up and down side to side said the hell with it took the axile nut off and it spun freely so short story long Hyundai sucks and watching this video I'd rather junk it then go thru all this
