Unfortunately, the Italians dubbed her "Minnie Mouse" because the sound was so small in the house: accurate, yes; thrilling, NO. She almost never went back because she wasn't asked.

Sutherland learnt bel canto singing from her husband, who reconstructed it after learning it out of books. Sills' teacher Liebling learnt it from Marchesi, who received it directly from Manuel Garcia the Younger. Sills' bel canto pedigree was flawless, and you can tell the difference instantly upon listening to the two women.

@@jasonhurd4379 I believe I am not alone in stating that Joan Sutherland was a superlative Bel Canto singer. She had a stronger and more evenly produced voice across her range. Sills initially had a silvery tone that over time turned very shrill. Both had strengths and weaknesses and both have supporters who hear what they want. Sills, by the way, replaced Renata Scotto who had been scheduled to sing this work.

Cordiali saluti.

You're talking about the cabaletta that follows this? Sills did not use it until her debut as Pamina at the Met in 1975. Yes, she was vocally better in the 1969 "Siege". But Sills threw way more embellishments in her LIVE Met version and her studio recording version. This is incredibly impressive. She probably had the fastest voice ever. Very sad that she only got her rightful recognition later in her career as Cleopatra. And after that less than 10 years at the top of the Operatic World.

Thank you for putting this up. I´ve sent it around to several of my friends who work here in the Berlin opera houses. Like me, they were flabbergasted by it. First, at the tempos she takes it is unsingable. It would be hard on the violin. But to sing it......? But she does, gloriously. Her underlying technique is so strong. It´s the only explanation.
