I.e.: evap solenoids, charcoal canister, be prepared to clog & burn out catalytic convertors causing exhaust clogg and back pressure issues. 706 heads never again and stay stock or 799/243. My heads were custom 706 and just caused more issues. Tuning will be a PIA for street and towing. Legit way better off with early 2000's Ford F250 Diesels for towing and tune modding for ft/lb torque. It was a fun experince but no one but real racers will tell others that "race" "drag" etc. engines get rebuilt after every race. A little but not enough to make a huge difference, air goes through just like the air conditioning condenser that’s in front of the radiator as well. It will pick up a bit of heat reducing the effectiveness of the radiator in that area but not by much at all. My transmission temp usually reads 160 f so the air coming out the back of its cooler can’t be more than that which is still much lower than engine temp so it’s still effective.

Get a pre-tune made as the 862/706 heads are way higher compression and will cause the ecu to shut down? Did you just re-use the ecu for the 5.3 and not get a base tune? Upgrade the intake manifold & throttle body? Replace lifters or install the springs yourself? Maybe fuel injectors or ignition coils have loose connection, maybe spark plugs or wires? @n8vjefe
11 ай бұрын
Just my opinion based on my build: I am far from a "mechanic motor builder" but I did learn a lot from this build. So the issue is the lift & duration of that cam along with the 706 heads being milled as much as they are in which there most likely might be a PTV issue and you'll get a bent valve or broken guide rod. Likewise unless the 706 heads have 2" intake and 1.57" or larger exhaust valves (not much room for bigger) with a 5 angle valve seat, there is no reason to use them even with the smaller chamber (higher compression ratio will just cause early detonation, making you run custom fuel) and make tunning hard as a mofo. Tuning my lq9/706/107lsa was hard for an experienced corvette race shop but I am running on 91 but runs like shit in summer and super rich in winter). I always tell everyone I rather have went with a 6.2l block & 799 heads & cheap ebay turbo kit... my motor is high on torque for towing but the gas mileage sucks being a tank AWD. If it is a tow vehicle for offroad or track, I'd still get a 6.2l block and try to sell off the 706 heads as the higher compression (smaller chamber) isn't a lot of power and you can find 243/799 heads cheaper. You want the heads to flow as much as possible and with that larger cam, you are looking for top end HP at max WOT Redline. The 706 heads even if worked are the wrong application and that big cam might be too big for the 4.8l but Richard Holdner would know about fitment better than anyone.
@n8vjefe
11 ай бұрын
The cam would be good for LQ9 but even better in a 6.2l block. I really do not think the 706 heads will work due to PTV being milled so much unless you went custom thicker gasket. But as stated, unless the valves are larger (same as 243/799 or bigger) it will just smother the vacuum of the motor. 6.2l 243/799 (that cam you have) a TBSS w/ LS3TB or LSXRT intake manifold w/ larger TB or save up for a LSA or turbo. Sorry to burst the bubble, just what I think. Especially with money being spent, do it right. I didn't listen to Richard Holdner about the 706 heads and should have 🤦♂️, it was a money pit and not worth the hassle/headache.

My escalade eats up high grade hills like nothing... but lesson learned, the head swap & tbss/ls3 tb cost more than the lsa blower or a turbo kit and gave less hp/tq... so next build is a 6.2l with LSA blower with the 317's I have left over or I'll look into LT1 heads... if you are still choosing between ls3 or tbss, always tbss with 42lb injectors for your situation.

What is your opinion of the Wilkes Performance heads?
@n8vjefe
Жыл бұрын
The 14 week lead time and no confirmation of what exact work was done left a bad taste in my mouth. Eye appealing work but if I was to do it over again... I'd save the money and just go with a larger displacement motor. $1200-1600 on heads or a larger 6.2l block... you tell me what would produce more hp/tq lol. If you are going to do what I did and get the 706 heads with larger valves.. just get 243 or 799 heads from a junkyard and have a local shop clean them up instead. Save your money as the Dcr/Scr didn't make a huge gain in hp/tq... so, I wouldn't recommend the business at all. Luckilly for me it worked out in the end with determination but I wouldn't do it again or tell others.. save the money or put it towards something better like a t3/t4 turbo instead.

@@chesspiece81 read the above comment I made in response to the other person. 243 would be the way to go but for the same price you can get AFR heads from summit racing and not have to wait 14 weeks with threatening to file a lawsuit for a refund. I would just seek another shop (don't know of any) or 3rd party aftermarket heads. In all seriousness the 243 heads already flow great and any upgrades would be negligable hp/tq gains, run them stock.. but I would run 317's and invest into a LSA supercharger or turbo instead... just my opinion after doing my build... no dyno tune for my AWD locally.. so it was a street tune. Estimated between 440-480hp at the wheels (all 4).

What valves do you have on those heads?
@n8vjefe
2 жыл бұрын
Just the oem brand (nothing special like light weight soda racing valves). Intake valve was upgraded to a 2" found on the 317/799/243 heads and kept the exhaust the same 1.55 but you could go to the 1.57". I went with the 706 for the smaller chamber to raise compression but I wouldn't do it a 2nd time around. I'd just save the $1200+ spent on an audio system.

@@harryfp1494 exactly. The heads were for the compression but not worth it. 243's maybe but I should have stayed with the 317's. A turbo would have been best. LSA blowers and others are hard to come by and still way over the $1400 for the heads though. Trust me, in hindsight, I would just save my money and put that $1200 towards a 6.2l block instead and swaped out.

@@charliecadaver666 when I completed the the build I couldn't find anyshop that could accomodate an awd or would be willing to dyno tune for me. Everything I did is illegal in california technically due to smog rules. Dyno shops apparently have been shut down and fined over 100k 🤯. So I was lucky enough to be ripped off for a "street tune" by a reputable "race shop" because nonretailer would ship the HPTUNER to me in cali either. Wish I had dyno results but the tuner estimated only 460whp max and more likely 400-430whp realistically. He considered the build very conservative & mild compared to the corvettes he builds & races on the track 🤦♂️.. I was like yeah man, I built this for towing not racing 😅.

I'll let you know over time ahaha. I calculated I am at 11.2:1 cr static.. usually it is dynamic cr that lets you know if it'll have issues with lower octane. Speed masters did a show about octane and compression. The research I found says it all depends on the tune and high cr can even get away using 87. My tuner said I am good and sticking with 91. The tbss with ls3 tb and the 706's suck in a lot of air! I would probably go with the 799/243's and save a lot of money 2nd time around. I did the upgraded 706's for torque and bottom end but it would be more fun using the 243/799 for top end freeway. I built my motor for towing though.

I swapped around the ignition coils, swapped around and cleaned up the spark plugs, and although not necessary, I used dielectric grease at every connection after aerosol cleaning them for potential grim contamination from installation... Night & Day operation! No more o2 sensor or ignition coil codes and the idle and drive is much better. The Escalade rips now. With AWD stability on, I can spin the tires 🤯. 40-80mph is like a rocket ship. Red light take offs in nornal "D" OD (not TOW 1st gear) are fast but click the "tow", turn off stability and pick your jaw off the ground because thus 8klb missile is flying! The 706 heads are an upgrade from the 317's paired with everything else for sure. Freeway is fun and lots of passing power. I think the 799/243's would be cheaper and you would get more top end speed freeway but lack the take off and passing power if the 706's... either heads would be an upgrade from the 317's but still not sure if it is really worth the extra $1k-1.5k you will spend on them. I would still say buy a turbo or LSA supercharger instead! Look into finding a m122 supercharger and needed parts from macdaddyparts.com

I have no idea. It isn't track/strip capable. This beast is too heavy. The transfer case would need to be swapped to a 4wd/2wd instead of AWD. The differential/s gears would be swapped from 3.73 to 4.10 at least. Also the torque convertor would be swapped to a 3k flash/stall... I hot dog it around but it isn't anything special other than sounding like a monster. It beat a 2013 or newer subaru impreza wrx from 0-90 probably 1/8 mi @ a steep grade by half a car length though. I know the 0-60 is under 8 seconds for a heavy ass tank. But.. all the newer trucks can do stuff like that too. It was a waste of money & pointless but it's my chosen project. 🤦♂️🤷♂️
