Personally I don’t think this scene ruined Eren’s character. His character always has been a person with a twisted view on life. Many say that this goes against his motivation but by this time I believe his hatred has completely changed direction. Originally his hatred was towards the titans, but after finding out the truth of the world and that titans were his own people his hatred was pointed at Marley for causing such grief. Eren is the type of character who will move forward to achieve his goal no matter what. Had Dina’s titan ate Bertholdt many important events leading to the final outcome would not happen. For example: 1. If Dina ate Bertholdt and take the power of the colossal titan, Eren would’ve never had the chance to interact with royal blood and find out how to truly utilize the founding titan. 2. He might never acquire the titan powers if his mother never died. His father, Grisha, only passed on the titan power to Eren after being reminded of his hatred for Marley. This was the final straw for Grisha to do what needed to be done. 3. Eren needed to fuel his own hatred of titans so he would join the survey corps. Now to talk about the rumbling: Had Eren never started the rumbling, his loved ones would be at war for the rest of their lives living within the cramped space behind the walls. And even if they could run away with the Azumabitos, they would have to live in hiding until their last dying breath. To him, that was not true freedom at all. However, by no means was the rumbling a right choice either. But the painful reality is, there is no right choice. All options led to a great loss no matter what side he was on. Eren started the rumbling not just because he hated the world but because he felt it was a necessary evil to set his friends free from the sins of their ancestors. By becoming the evil, the “devils” of Paradise and the Marleyians would work together to save the world. At the same time he NEEDED Mikasa to kill him and to have a reason for it. Otherwise, Ymir would never release the curse of the titans. Ymir was shackled down for 2000 years because she was a slave of her love for King Fritz. Mikasa almost mirror’s Ymir in the fact that she is a slave to her love for Eren. However, when Mikasa chose to break free from her chains of love and do the right thing to end Eren’s life, it made Ymir come to a realization. This realization that even when we love someone so much, there are things that must be done for the greater good. Eren himself cannot erase the titans, only Ymir can. Hence why he needed to convince her at the same time. Although many of his friends and comrades died because of the rumbling, Eren believed this was the only way to truly end it all and was the best outcome. It is unfortunate that Eren cannot escape his destiny and that he will die no matter what. If he didn’t inherit the attack titan he would’ve died a soldier at the very beginning, had he not started the rumbling he would’ve died in 4 years anyways, and of course the official timeline where Mikasa kills him. It is very possible that there could have been another solution if someone else took on the founding titan. But we will never know because Attack on Titan is Eren’s story. He quite literally created his own monsters. Eren was a slave to freedom. For him, it was either sacrifice his loved ones for the world, or the world for his loved ones. And he chose his loved ones in the end.

I don't think eren himself did this, I think he blames himself for it but ymir lead dina to Carla so eren would be how he is and grisha would go through with the plan, because as I see it unless there is an ability which wasn't explained(the ending is a little messy so that's possible) there is no way eren could control dina at that moment, and don't say shit like he could because if he could control any mindless Titan from the past before he had any Titan power or contact with royal blood then he could have triggered the titans to not attack Paradise and wither not do anything or attack marry and many things would be different, eren can't just affect the past like that, using both ht attack and founder he controlled grisha by sending memories of himself talking to grisha's image (eren looking at grisha through memories using founder power) so he didn't have some insane power to just manipulate the past with anyone, I don't think he could have controlled dina, it was probably either ymir and he blames himself or it's a plot hole probably, if not please somebody explain

So many people miss the point. Eren is a slave to the future he already saw before. He's forced to change the past in order for the future to unfold as it's destined too cause he came to the realisation he can't change the future no matter what. So the only thing he can is ensure his past self grows up to be the same as him to ensure he gets the founder. He's basically living thousands of years simultaneously in the past, present and future. It f**ked his mind up beyond belief

It's amazing how many people don't seem to understand that this choice was totally out of Eren's control. The power that the Founder gave him confused the hell out of him, yet he was also making sure what happened in his past still happened. Eren wasn't even making his own choices anymore at this point, so Reiner realized Eren WANTED to be stopped because he couldn't take the responsibility of wielding said power. Eren thought power would give him freedom, but it just burdened him with responsibility. Now that he's reached godhood, the responsibility is way too much for any mortal to handle.

Guys. I have a question. Can someone answer it please? If Eren was able to use the founding titans power to change the past and make Dina target Carla instead of Bertholdt, couldn't he have started the Rumbling earlier too? Like instead of making it happen after Gabi shot him, couldn't he have made it happen before the walls even got breached, starting the Rumbling wiping out Marley, and Eren and his friends/ 104th cadets are safe? I mean he was touching Zeke and changed the past, he could just do it again... And how did Eren even get his Titan powers in the first place? Without manipulating Grisha, he couldn't. But he used his powers to manipulate him to get his powers. Someone please explain these lol
@thevere7

That's the question I have too but im thinking of some possible explanations but idk if they make sense. The founding Titan belonged to the girl Ymir, the first one to turn into a titan, so my best guess is that she played a huge role in all the events that took place. I don't think Eren had full control of the Funding titan's power. Eren couldn't just start the rumbling earlier cus it was already written how it would turn out by Ymir. I think he could change some stuff but not the entire thing. If you watch the events leading to the rumbling, Eren saw the future of everything that would unfold and he couldn't do anything about it. He could delay stuff like he did with Berthold's death but the result and future would be the same. Idk if I make sense.

@@DepressMosquito where did he change the past? his mom was eaten in the past and want he did only allowed that event to happen. nothing changed at all, everything happened as it should and has happened. Eren blaming himself for directing Dina towards mom. What people need to understand is AoT's story is a fixed single timeline and cannot have TIME PARADOX. What happened has happened, THE PAST CANNOT CHANGE. Actually in that moment in time (mom gets eaten), Eren was neither the Attack Titan (Dad) nor Founding Titan(Freya). Future Eren can only speak to previous inheritors of Attack Titan (Dad) who was busy stealing Founding's power (He HAD to make his dad do it because that already happened, that is the only way he get founding powers and the only way he could see into the past). Future Eren couldn't do anything in a larger scale of things because it is a paradox. (If Eren asked dad to save his mom, mom didn't get eaten, Eren wouldn't become the Attack/Founding Titan and wouldn't see this memory and couldn't ask dad to save mom; It's a PARADOX; if he sees this memory then his mom has already been eaten), he is just watching it happen, powerless and can only blames himself. As Historia said: this is not Eren's choice, it's the consequence of everybody's action that caused the Rumbling. If the wall was never broken, mom never eaten, Eren never got Founding Power, Rumbling wouldn't happen. Imagine being Eren, you get to see all past, present and future at the same time but everything is set in stone, he can't change anything, he can only move forwards and see how the story plays out

I think Eren accidentally became a God with untold power and a perspective of time that he can't rationalise. The reason he says his head is all messed up is because having the Attack Titan's powers over time, and the Founder's Powers to control Eldians meant he became untethered in time once he had both, he became the vessel for a vengeful god who could weave fates like threads and he had no idea what he was doing with it, only to 'keep going forward', toward a fate he assumed destined. That's why he eventually calls himself an idiot with too much power, but no human, not even a genius like Armin is meant to be, would have been able to control that amount of power with the mind of a mere human. He was a victim of godhood.

A lot of people saying that this ruined Eren's character, but if you think about it, if Bertholdt died there, Paradis island would likely have never acquired the colossal titan's power, and subsequentially, everyone within the walls would have been wiped out. Eren really didn't have any choice other than to redirect the titan somewhere else. So in the end, it is still Marley's fault that Eren's mother died and his hatred against them is still justified imo
