As an impartial yesfan who likes all eras just the same (even though I consistently struggle to get into Topographic Oceans and Relayer), this captures my vision of "Yes snobs" brilliantly and I laughed my bejesus off so many times. "Sound chaser....needs to sound more like Relax" "Trevor 'I eat at chez nous' Rabin" "Did you hear me say JOHN LENNON" "No fantasy landscape...tripping off with a Powerpoint presentation"

I never liked much of Topographic Oceans. You could maybe edit a decent single album out of it, but it wouldn't be great.

Oh man you gotta give Topo and Relayer another shot. Especially if you love CTTE, you’ll enjoy Relayer too! Those are both amongst my favorite Yes albums ever! And I say this as someone who, like you, is a fan of all eras (except for post-Squire Yes)

This is great but the other Hitler rant about Yes is even better in my opinion. I wish it would get re-uploaded. It's when he's bitching about going to see Yes and finds out Jon Anderson is no longer the lead singer.
@PutItAway101

Was that the one where he listens to "Fly From Here" near the start? I wish I'd thought of that, since my rant is really about 90125, but I couldn't figure out how to write it so he learns about the album from the generals, but he also knows the music in order to rant about it, so I made it retrospectively about 90125 when he learns that Big Generator is more of the same. Would've been simpler and funnier to just show him listening to 90125.

But no "side-long" pieces as mentioned in the video. A whole side of a vinyl record is approx 20 minutes, like Gates of Delirium, Close to the Edge etc.

@Jeremy Spade Because the video talks specifically about the lack of "side-long pieces", the guy I'm replying to is trying to counter that by saying there's a 7 minute song, which is obviously not the same thing

I like the titular song, and decent portion of the album, but I respect the opinion of a more invested fan. Also, the "chez nous" dig is 100% accurate. My thought process short-circuited the first time I heard that lyric.

i like Big Generator myself. I like all their albums. Even Union, Ladder, and Heaven & Earth. They may not turn you into a starship trooper who's close to the edge. But the songs are still fun that Ithet can lift me up to ascend. 3 generations of Yes fans in my family. Grandpa, father, and I have all seen them perform live. Who else do I ask has had that much time and influence under their belt? 🎵Yes is the answer. And you know that for sure...🎵

But then you can't do the scene where Hitler learns about the album from the officers, and then have him rant about an album he's never heard. Actually most of his complaints are about 90125, but it has to be set at a time when he's already heard it, so the Big Generator thing is mostly an excuse for him to retrospectively rant about 90125 because he was hoping they would've learned something from it. I have seen another video where Hitler rants about Fly From Here, and they cleverly solved the problem by making it look like Hitler was listening to the song just before he takes his glasses off, but I didn't think of that when I made mine

I wouldn't say that 90125 was insubstantial. If you were born in 1973, for example, like I was, then 90125 was probably the first Yes album you ever heard. I should say, "Owner Of A Lonely Heart" was probably the first Yes song that you heard if you were my age. I had the single on 45rpm. I became a Yes fan during the 80's. 90125 was the first Yes album that I had and I listened to that cassette over and over. Then I was turned onto Fragile. I loved it of course. I don't remember ever consciously comparing the two albums. I loved both of them. If I had to say which one I like better, I'd go with Fragile. Songs like "We Have Heaven," "South Side of the Sky," "Long Distance Runaround," "The Fish (Schindleria Praematurus)," and "Heart of the Sunrise" make Fragile the easy choice. And of course, Bill Bruford. My experience with Rush was similar. I became a fan after the Hold Your Fire album was released. I wasn't familiar with albums like A Farewell To Kings, 2112, Hemispheres, or Permanent Waves. Not yet. But because I became a Rush fan during their synth years, or whatever you wanna call them, I like that material as much as the 70's material. My ears were used to synthesizers, having grown up listening to pop music on the radio as a kid. Some of my favorite Rush albums are ones like Power Windows and Hold Your Fire, where Alex's guitar wasn't as prevalent as it had been up until then. I think the synths created cool textures and were used tastefully. Rush always changed with the times, like when they would throw in a reggae groove here and there after reggae was becoming more popular thanks to artists like Bob Marley and The Police. I guess what I'm saying is, I like it all, with the exception of the last few Yes albums. The last one I bought was The Ladder.

I was born in 1973 but I've older siblings who showed me old Yes material from a really early age. 'Owner of a lonely heart' is not bad compared to other stuff from the 80s... but compared to Yes' 70s stuff (Fragile, CTTE) it's just awful.

Yes has almost always been my favorite band (followed closely by The Who, incidentally) since I began listening to heavy and progressive rock in 1971, but yes, as the funny, little mustachioed dictator said, "Yes is fucked." Sad, but true.

@jeremyspade4159 Oh, really, genius?! It is beyond obvious that I'm not the real Carl Palmer, whom, by the way, I've had the pleasure of meeting on a few occasions. Carl is quite a decent chap; or at least he presents himself this way to fans such as I. If you were actually under the impression that I was feigning to be Mr. Palmer, than you are rather dumb.

This was so fucking funny and deadly accurate I literally cried I was laughing so hard. Thank you. I've been a huge prog rock nerd since high school and Yes is always and forever my favorite. You capture every Yes fan's disillusion at the jump from the 70's to the 80's perfectly. I like 90125 and Big Generator. There are songs I love on both. Trevor Rabin isn't Steve Howe, but who the fuck is? And as long as Jon Anderson is in, I'm in...but of course Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman, Howe and Squire are THE line-up. All of this is hilarious and has nothing to do with Hitler and actual Nazis--however it's a little bit uncomfortable having Hitler rant about Trevor Rabin--because in actuality Rabin is Jewish. I didn't realize that until recently. I think of him primarily South African, which of course doesn't mean he can't be Jewish, I was just clueless...anyway, just curious if anyone else noticed that. I know the Hitler Meltdowns have naught to do with Hitler, really, so kind of ironic, in a way...
@PutItAway101

Melissa Williams thanks! I appreciate your kind words. I knew Rabin was Jewish but I never really thought about it when I wrote this, I think the idea that Hitler judges people entirely on prog credibility regardless of race colour or creed is part of the joke.

Me too! Yes and Rush are my two favorite bands. Big Generator was the album that got me listening to Yes, and then I went back and caught up on all their other material. I have to disagree with Hitler too. :) Big Generator certainly doesn't have the 25 minute prog-rock tracks with fantasy lyrics that their other albums do, but the songs are still top notch!

I didn't think I could watch another Downfall rip and find it funny, but this is full of really sharp wit - it's a shame only a relatively select few will get all the jokes. And of those a few misguided souls might wonder why this is akin to news of the German army deserting, whilst Stalin is promising to fuck the fürher up the arse with a Kosher Bratwürst.

frink32 Thanks. The key to writing these things is you've got to use your best material at the key moments ...you need something that makes him take his glasses off, something that makes him throw the pencil, and then right at the end when he decides to kill himself in the original. "Asia, for chrissakes!" Yep that'll do it. LOL.
