I wish they had filmed a complete performance of Hamlet with all of these same actors.

It's a cultural difference between Japanese and British , for British this is a common greeting cheek-kiss, however to a Japanese this is an act of humiliation, what makes this scene so sad is Captain Yonoi indeed "felt for the kiss"

If I was kissed by David Bowie, I would kiss him back. HE was so irresistible. I can imagine what it must have been like for a Japanese man to experience this. I wonder how they got through tat scene.

Watching the film, it is obvious that Yonoi fell in love with Celliers the first time he saw him; in this scene, Yonoi is hopelessly conflicted by the public humiliation that Celliers' act has just exposed him to, but cannot do what the code of honour demands and kill the man he is in love with. He collapses with the knowledge that Celliers realises Yonoi loves him, and maybe loves him in return, but in that moment realises that that love can never be realised. A very sad, hopeless moment.

He was the object of his hidden obsession and that kiss broke his heart. A gesture of love to a man who cant come to terms with who really is se because of his culture and career as a military man.

I thought the effect of the kissing scene was amazing, but the movie director, Nagisa Oshima, said it was due to machine trouble. Oshima said it was a miracle.

Mister Babadook The music is "Sowing the seed". This is the scene that Celliers sowed the seed in Yonoi's mind. Ryuichi Sakamoto composed the soundtrack music after he acted as Yonoi. Great, isn't it!

Apart from being horrified at the sexual connotations of the kiss in front of all his men, I think Yonoi could have also looked stricken afterwards because he knew what this would mean for Celliers.
@phangirlable

+KaoruSan241 It's both, which makes the scene so incredibly powerful. He knows that not only did Cellier's destory him but also himself. And that he put Yonoi into a situation that lead to Celliers destruction, no matter how Yonoi would have acted. It's cruel and tragic and heart-wrenching. :(
